I agree whole-heartedly, quite amazing really ... but is there anyone on here who knows what the purchase price is to the chandlers and is brave enough to post it here... might be quite eye opening./QUOTE]

I doubt the chandler is making a sky-high profit on them, more likely the manufacturer.

OK we all know we get ripped off as boat owners from time to time, but even the chandlery apologised for this one...

Yup that's £51.20 for some toilet seat hinges

can you beat it? maybe....volvo spare parts..replacment for an out drive for friends my volvo engine the hydraulic steering arms seal, went due to barnacle growth wear.

volvo agent said impossible to fix, needs replacement, cost 1000 euro. was paid and fitted.

i took the old arm down to the auto indusrail area in fethiye where the boat was and in a hydraulic shop they had a new seal fitted and tested overnight for 10 euros. spare part now.!

OK, I bought the plugs from Beeston Marina, who charged me £8 odd per plug, they told me the N at the end made them very expensive.

the military quote was for £27 per spark plug.

I'm sure our PBO brothers and sisters would knock something up pdq, but if time is an issue couldn't you do without a loo seat for a bit

I don't think so. The sealing of the toilet seat and lid on Lavac toilets is crucial to the flushing operation. I have read that one of the reasons that Lavacs are so pricy is the high number of bowl rejects, which have to be perfect in order for the seal to fit.

I made a substantial down payment when I bought the wife. Nobody told me of all the spare parts I would have to pay for each year to keep her going, (clothes, shoes, food). I wonder what price a chandler would charge?

Fin keel or bilge? Beating, reaching or running? Does she have a cruising chute? How many cylinders? What is her range?
We need to know!

Its not really the chandleries, I bought a boat and trailer for £1200 took it home and tidied it up buying most parts cheap from caravan shop and auto spares dealer, a short while after a man gave me £7000 for it!
I bought another yacht for £7000 in the brokerage for £14500.
I swapped my £7000 yacht for a £30,000 yacht.
The deals are out there, you just have to go get them.
Boaty , yachty folk want to pay more than things are worth, I always get discounts and never pay what the Dealer or Chandlery what they want, or for that matter what anyone wants.
I don't think I have ever paid over the odds for boaty bits or boats.

biggest savings as far as i can see come on bits for your engine - see the volvo owner post above. the alternator on by beta as almost £200 but a local auto electrician seels the same unit (but not paited red) for about £100.

another example is an LED cabin light with built in on/off switch, cheapest chandler offer was around £50. A unit cost me £8 on ebay although i had to wait for delivery from china.

Ah, I never got passed the luxuries of a Jabsco pump job:eek: so I'm not up on the Lavacs. At 50 quid for a set of plastic hinges I'd be thinking of a bucket and lid combo:eek:

anyone bought a Yanmar starter key? you know that little bit of chrome plated metal that starts the thing, they'er all the same

Not only are they all the same, the lock on mine would take any key or probably any random flat object. I finally realised how pointless it was when my dad motored us round to the travelift using the key for the padlock that stops the Jon Buoy getting nicked.

I replaced it with a simple switch when I was re-wiring the boat.

And starter motors. The Volvo one replaced on a friends boat some years ago looked identical to the one on my VW. His was £500, mine was £100.

Here is a good one-my old british built hydraulic steering pump was not working so bought a new Vetus one for about £200-no complaints on price.
Then some months later stripped it to find a broken plunger spring BUT firm long since defunct.Went to a spring specialist and sourced a replacement-because it was only worth a few pence they gave it to me as a free "sample"
Recall I sold pump on e bay for about £100

I remember a few years ago a Rolls Royce mechanic ordered brake shoes from Nissan!

He told me they were identical, but a small fraction of the cost of the "real thing".

I think I can (beat your rip-off).
£85 plus import fees etc for a service kit for a Groco sea toilet.
The kit consists of two valves and some washers.
Suffice to say the bog went into the skip. Ironically I bought a Lavac.

Yanmar rip

The plastic cover for the engine key socket on the control panel - replacement nearly £12. Even the parts dept was a bit startled.

(Currently replaced with the cap off a water bottle).

I purchased a plastic funnel in Antigua (for putting fuel in the tank from jerry cans).

It was a comlete bargain at just $110EC (which is about £25).
