Their hinge set is £42.91 http://www.sparesmarine.co.uk/webshop/toilets/zenith-toilet/all-spares/hinge-set-kit/ The price seems outrageous but the OP was not ripped off all that much by his local chandler.
Yep, they only charged him £8.29 more  .

I agree, the prices are outrageous - but a lot of companies charge whacking amounts for spares of their products - it's the icing on the cake for them.

Sparesmarine is still a good company to deal with though (no connection).

Seems to be the way with non-internet sales. I needed a new engine stop cable and found that an Ebay trader, Cable-tec would do me one for £12 +£5 P&P. When I looked at their shop I realised that they are only about 12 miles away from home, so I went instead. They charged me £15! Plus the fuel, so I might as well have ordered it.

How about this one then...

Volvo Penta water pump - £235.20

Exactly the same pump (but not painted green) for LDV van from Unipart - £48.20

That green paint must have gold flake in it or something.

Thanks for all the votes of support

Some times its just easier to bite the bullet....
£15 return to B&Q in fuel.
£5 more to visit one or 2 others...
£5-10 for the spares
An hours drive there, and an hours drive back, plus time looking and fitting...

Against delivered to shop collect on way to boat, fitted and working in 5 minutes...

I had just got a good price on some other gear, I do not think the chandlery made to much on them, either way they where apologetic you win some  you loose some ...

I quite agree, sometimes it's nice to just have the correct part and not put any effort into getting it. If this was on the PBO forum I'd have told you off but anyone that values their time would make a similar decision. After all - your loo is now ready to go sailing but with the B&Q close match you may have spent a week on it and then still had to buy the real part before you got on the water.

Actually the ones I didn't buy must have been the military version. I ended up paying more than 5.99 each.

Ouch:eek:

But we all moan about the 'marine' version of boaty bits, but a quick look at Chandlers (the firt three I could find) suggests that they might not be doing so well (admittedly, accountants can make it look a little different:rolleyes:)

Marine Megastore

Mailspeed

Gaelforce (looks a little more healthy)

So who is making on these massive markups... the original manufacturers perhaps?

I always support my local chandlers, my local one is good value, and the staff are excellent.

The chandlers I bought the plugs from are not local, but otherwise good.

The chandlers who hold the gold plated military verson, are also normally quite good.

So the quiz now has 2 answers, the price I bought the plugs for, and the price of the super awsome versions.

I was quoted £270 for a new halyard swivel for a Selden Furlex 100s when I only wanted the nylon composite bit of it. Eventually found a Selden dealer willing to contact Selden and got me one for £35. Plastimo Contest Compass £143 local chandlers £89 ebay. Eberspacher parts rip off, consequently will never have one again. Work around, shop around, vote with your wallet, can't pay, won't pay...:D

I made a substantial down payment when I bought the wife. Nobody told me of all the spare parts I would have to pay for each year to keep her going, (clothes, shoes, food). I wonder what price a chandler would charge?

You sure. I got ripped off £40 for a door lock in B&Q this week.

Oh, yeah, I'm certainly not praising B&Q as a model of reasonable prices. Their electrical stuff in particular is very dear, and their little packs of screws etc.

But I'm sure even they wouldn't have the neck to charge £50 for some toilet-seat hinges :)

I agree whole-heartedly, quite amazing really ... but is there anyone on here who knows what the purchase price is to the chandlers and is brave enough to post it here... might be quite eye opening.

The only way to bring about change is collective action and boycotting products/suppliers who set these ridiculous prices. I'm sure our PBO brothers and sisters would knock something up pdq, but if time is an issue couldn't you do without a loo seat for a bit
