I am new to Devon having moved my boat to Dartmouth earlier in the year. I am taking friends out in a couple of weeks who have young children.

Could anyone recommend a beach to anchor off for a trip ashore somewhere in the Brixham area. Idea is to take the kids ashore via dingy for a couple of hours on the way up to Brixham for the night, weather permitting.

You will find most of the coves & bays in that area are weather dependant, so be prepared to change plans or move if it get's lumpy.
But a couple to look at in the area are Hope Cove, Anstey's Cove & Babbacome Bay (all next to each other) or Slapton Sands/Beesands. A bit further round is Teignmouth, but you will need to use the visitor pontoon there.
You will need to look at the prevailing wind & swell direction - the nice thing is that you can hide up the Dart or in Teignmouth estuary if the weather outside isn't kind - we've done a few day trips out from Dartmouth for a sail and then just headed up the river and dropped the hook by anchor stone for lunch and dinghy trips before heading back to the berth.
For a little further afield and if the wind is in the N to E, the other Hope Cove past Salcombe is stunning - but not very enjoyable in S to SW (prevailing winds).

As @Moodysailor says there are loads of places to visit. When I was on the Exe Anstey's Cove was a nice day out.

If you visit Slapton the Strete Gate end is naturist, which may or may not be to your or your visitors liking.

We were a visitor to Brixham marina last summer for a week in July and also spent a night at the kingswear side dart marina. When at Brixham we motored in our blow up dinghy out of the marina, towards the yacht club and found a sheltered inlet with a beach and some walks in hills . It was sandy etc but quite busy although we didn’t reach as far as battery gardens on foot . At Dartmouth we turned west as we came out and found a lovely quiet beach just populated by a few nudists where we anchored off for lunch/afternoon swim. Hardly any other yachts there apart from a large mobo chartered by Mr Tom Cruise I gathered afterwards although we didn’t catch sight of him.

If you don't mind a short detour as you leave Dartmouth, or for another time, Blackpool Sands is very good for kids:

Even more striking if you arrive by road. Watch out for swell, I always think that Start Bay suffers from refraction around Start Point if there is much around from the SW.
As neilf has said, Fishcombe Cove would be good and only a stones throw from Brixham.

Can second Anstey's Cove, lovely spot with nearby options to cover you from anything but easterlies and a nice walk up the cliffs.
