I'll be getting the rail saw, never had a problem with Parkside stuff. Not top pro quality, but good top end DIY. Sanders might be tempting too....easier to smuggle into the shed than the generator a couple of weeks ago.

Multitools are good for some jobs- excellent for plunge cuts into floorboards for example, but for a neat cut on a copper
pipe you can't beat the Kopex pipe cutter. If you do buy cheap tools you end up having to throw them away after a few jobs- you generally get what you pay for.

Nonsense. That might be true in general but I've found LIDL multi-grinders & the 12v vacuum cleaner to be fantastic value for the money.Twenty quid for a Parkside Multi-Grinder.Eighty to a hundred quid for a Dremal equivalent? I'd be very surprised if there is eighty quids worth of difference.
I've never known a tool take so much punishment & give such value for money & my background is in Engineering. My only criticism is that there is no automatic cut out when the battery is fully charged.I've overcharged & screwed a couple of them.:disgust:

+1. Did you find a source for replacement batteries, or did you just chuck the whole thing away and buy a new one?

I managed to overcharge the multi-tool battery, and now it holds a charge for a couple of minutes only.

I need a multi-grinder & when you want one you can't get your hands on one for love nor money.Very poor marketing strategy by whoever really makes them in my opinion.

It's cleverer than you think. Lidl only stock this stuff say every six months- they buy in bulk, they get away with smaller stores, and by selling stuff twice a year they still get a good bit of the market (how many times a year do you buy a drill?)- plus the impulse buy effect, i.e. I don't know if I will use this tool, but it looks handy, and if I don't buy it today I'll probably be waiting ages for it to come up again...

How many of us have bought 'useful' stuff from Lidl and never actually used it :) ?

Multi tool, brilliant, use it frequently. Router, brilliant, never use it.

RO Sander looks just like mine. Can thoroughly recommend, it's still going strong after sanding an entire 40 ft hull plus various other jobs. Only downside is that it seems to get heavier and heavier after a couple hours of use.

Thanks Vic,that 18v li-ion powered drill might have enough grunt to be useful! I have an ROK 10.5 li-ion drill which is amazing for length of charge, but a bit puny for concrete or large wood bits.

Yep been there! A wall chaser gadget used once! Had to come up for air even with respirator!

I found I could buy six more powerful batteries for a tenner but I did'nt trust my ability to solder on the tags without effecting the batteries so did'nt risk it.( the originals seem to be spot welded so I reckon there was'nt the heat transfer) Besides,Parkside said they would sell me a new battery for 15 quid which when you consider that the whole unit is only about twenty quid I did'nt think was a good proposition. My main unit is now so knackered that when you turn it on you very often have to sort of bump start it to get the motor rotating/give it a nudge on it's rotation + it simply dos'nt have the power any longer to make the 20mm grinding wheels cut effectively. It is alright with the 1mm diameter milling cutters but it's oomph is seriously depleted.
I hav'nt experience the batteries only holding their charge for a limited time duration. The one I seriously overcharged just dos'nt seem to have any real grunt. It's the capacity that seems to be affected.

I can't say I have bought stuff from LIDL that has been wasted at all really but then I am so tight & cautious.I did buy a Black & Decker "Dust Devil" once that was absolute rubbish. It was rechargeable & only lasted one charge but what I really mean is from the manufacturing Companies perspective. These multi-grinders particularly I think are at least 40 odd quid under priced when you consider the competition. There is only Dremal that I can find & they are a minimum of 80/90 quid.
I would love to have the money & bring out my own product because I think there is neeche in the market for a slightly more powerful version.
At twenty quid with the three year guarantee I think these products are simply stunning.

That sounds like a good recommendation to me & as I shall have to have my boat hauled out eventually & tackle that sort of work investing in one of those now looks like a good investment. Just to be sure is it the round one that you are recommending?

Incidentally: Managed to buy one of the 10.8v multi-grinders on ebay but had to pay about the same price as a new one twenty quid? That should be an indication to Parkside I would have thought that their marketing policy is wrong :ambivalence:. Anyway I'm very pleased because it now means that I can get on with vital work :)

PPS: I shall buy one of those multi tool things as well I think because if I understand it correctly that could also be a Godsend.......just hopping the batteries are interchangeable :encouragement:
