I was stopped a couple of years back in No name, Florida. Cop (with a gun!) said my dingy needed a Florida reg on it and insisted that it didn’t matter even if I was a visitor. Told him he was being stupid as there was no legal way of doing so.

So I also asked if all U.S. drivers had to change their car license plates when crossing to border into Mexico or Canada for a quick visit. He mumbled, shuffled a bit and told me to be on my way.

Wearing a life jacket or sticking to the No wake rules are things you can do , cost you nothing and help you comply with their rules. Registration and other bits of paperwork are impossible to legally comply with.
Good response to the issue except for one thing. Might not be a great idea to call someone stupid who is carrying a gun, especially an official and in the US. o_O

Maybe but I lived in the U.S. for 10 years so used to dealing with them. Being aggressive or being a threat is a big no no, calling them out for being stupid is fine and you can always say it with a smile on your face.

I've been here for many years now.

I don't understand why so many have problems with US law enforcement, I think i had 1 issue many years ago with immigration, her supervisor over heard the conversation an quickly put the officer in her place and an apology to me. Again many years ago I got stopped for speeding - the limit had changed since my previous visit and the rather attractive young lady sheriff let me off because she liked my accent.

Also had a lot of dealings with the coastguard obviously, many are no more than kids so often don't really know what they're trying to enforce. I had one who didn't reconise my radio license because he'd never seen one like it before (most only have the basic minimum - I have the top level as it was only a few $ more so seemed worth it).

One of the yearly inspections the older/senior coastguard threw a life jacket overboard for the MOB drill, I told him to keep watching it and pointing, he tried to say he wasn't part of the crew but a passenger - he gave in with a smile when I told him he'd just been promoted! Very much old school type.
