Any mobile outdrive (Enfield) mechanics?

Hi, after a 3 year break I’m recommissioning my little Palamino 24. She’ll need a new interior and cosmetic work to the hull and topsides but I’m happy doing those. Today I got the Perkins 4108 running again without too much trouble. She is on hardstanding storage close to home so easy to work on. The only bit I’m not comfortable with is sorting the sterndrive, an Enfield Z drive. It likely needs a check over, service / fresh oil and maybe new bellows, but I’d rather not remove it from the boat if possible. I’ve also never worked out how to raise it so would like to get that fixed too.

Does anyone know of a mobile mechanic, midlands area, who could do this for me? I’m on the Grand Union (but out of the water) not far from Foxton Locks so I’m hoping there is some local expertise.

Thanks in advance!

The enfield 130 winds sideways to lift and there's a locking pin to release first.
When I had a pair I rigged a stainless cable to release the reversing catch and pulleys to lift them straight up to davits if likely to dry out.
They are fairly basic, take 8.5 pints of ep90 gear oil, as long as grub screws are not siezed removing to change gaiters is fairly easy as long as out of water.

Thanks that’s really helpful. Honestly I’m not a mechanical muppet but I simply cannot find that locking pin and I’ve looked at every photo, exploded diagram etc I can find online.

That’s brilliant thanks, I’ll have a good look tomorrow. Meanwhile… ENGINE ENVY! 😛
Am I right in thinking the winding handle (that of course I don’t have but I can fab something up I’m sure) then goes into the ‘cup’ marked in green?

Have you tried Alan Stafford at SOS Boatservices? He is based at Gloucester but will travel. i believe he had these out drives on one of his boats.

That was a peugeot xud9 that was freshly marinised, the pic was when it had just been dropped in hence why so clean.
It was the first one I found showing the outdrive from inside, it was a home brew marinising job on a pair of car engines I had rebuilt, not had the boat for a good few years now though as wanted a bit more speed and better sea keeping.

Just for info Alan is still in business but, post covid, doesn't travel as far now. Thanks for the pointer though! got the bilges pumped out today so it is getting more pleasant to work on board, will be tackling the Z drive soon.

If I remember right if you need to replace steering fork casting you also have to replace swivel plate but can't remember why (possibly reversing catch width), later forks have pinch bolts instead of the crappy grub screws, I drilled and tapped the steering pin on mine and did away with those grub screws as well.

Could you not take drive to him.
Well I’d rather not break the seal as it was watertight when last afloat but yeah it’s an option. To be honest I’m getting such helpful advice on here that, with a bit of googling / YouTube, I’m more confident to have a go myself. What could possibly go wrong?

(And then when it’s in 1,000 pieces on the floor I gather it up and take it to the expert anyway!)

All useful stuff to know. I had a look at it today (whilst pumping out the bilges, lovely job, 3 years of rainwater, a bit of the Thames, diesel and oil!) and I’m getting more tempted to have a go myself. Acquire the skills for the future.

Or balls it up totally. We’ll see!

If you split the lower case for any reason check you have the double seal and if not replace with one, it's a modified shaft seal carrier that takes 2 seals back to back.
OK is there anything you don't know about these things???? Seriously thanks so much for the steers, really helpful!

I taught myself, with help from those on here, how to take off my leg and then engine out this spring just gone.

Its a relatively big and some what daunting job, but it's not actually that difficult.

Mine is a mercruiser alpha 2, I did needed an alignment tool and a bellows fitting tool.

And importantly as you say, skills for the future 👍

If you're a competent sort of a chap, crack on.

Yep I think that is the way to go, at least see how far I get. The end-plan for the boat is actually to take her to the Netherlands (not directly on the North Sea mind - in a nice big ferry thank you!) as my other half lives there and has a caravan close to a huge lake, 'The Kaag'. She is the perfect boat for there and boats in NL are a lot more expensive so it's a worthwhile exercise (well, as financially worthwhile as anything can be involving boats!). Of course there is a huge boat repair industry over there but I'd still like it to arrive as sorted as possible.

Well i now have a winding handle and I’ve got the locking moving (a bit). But it is not rotating so much as a degree. Anyone got any idea how far the pin has to move? I can get it far enough that it past the swivel plate so I suspect that is it in the “rotate” position. Think it may be a case of looking to free off the actual swivel joint next
