Any alternative to Dremel ?

Anything is better than a Dremel. After repeatedly repairing mine (motor windings each time, it just can't handle any serious use), I got fed up with it and replaced it with a 300W Parkside die grinder from Lidl for under 30 €. Much more robust and much stronger, although also slightly heavier. It has a Dremel size chuck plus a bigger 6mm one. Would recommend something like that.

Dremels are actually more hobbyists tools .... not designed for heavy duty work. Excellent when used in the designed environment.

Better is to get a proper battery drill such as Makita or similar .... and when the stock batterys finally give up - open case and insert LiPo or LifePo cells to similar voltage and use a budget LiPo / LiFePo charger .....

OR

open battery case ... disconnect cells (leave in for the weight to balance) and connect a 12v lead .....

I suppose it depends on what you want to use it for? I got one a few years ago with everyone raving about them, but I rarely use it. A cordless angle grinder a drill do all I need on the boat.

I use a Firik version. I can't remember where I bought it from but it's taken vast amounts of abuse and works really well after about 4 or 5 years. I can't comment on Dremel itself but I'm quite happy with the Firik..

I had a black and decker wizard that did a lot of work. It eventually packed up so I replaced it with a dremel that works well. I did consider buying another to keep on the boat but the amount of use it gets nowadays doesn't warrant it.
A multi tool has been very handy, but the Parkside one I have feels 'crude' compared to friends dewalt. There is a slight difference in price though !

Hmm, that's a neat idea and DIY solution. I might try adapting an old battery drill direct to a 12v wander lead to an Anderson socket on a domestic battery. A 7m lead will take the drill to all parts of the boat cabins and deck, or I could even attach it to a small burglar alarm battery ( small battery , not burglar :) )
