Antifouling

Had the boat lifted out last weekend - off to the yard this weekend to do some antifouling. We're going to try rollering for a change (always brushed before but this boat is bigger) - has anyone got any tips for best usage?

Didn't think anybody didn't use rollers! Use cheapish ones and throw them away after the job, nothing more to say really, scrape any loose stuff off, when wet preferably, (less dust), use a mask when doing so. Just get it lashed on, with an extra coat on the waterline and bows. A little thin skim on the echosounder log is ok.

I use a wide masking tape. I also use a thin radiator roller for a better finish and helps with the 'curves' with a long handle you dont have to bend so far. I use a drop of thinners to give a easy first coating. Use full strength on all leading edges (bow and keel) and on the waterline and rudder.

to add to that,

keep roller in a plastic bag between coats.

buy one that takes a broom handle for even less labour

dont dilute unless told too

allow empty tins to dry, but then I have been using the stuff in the netherlands where they are VERRY GREEN

Buy best quality masking tape.

If you use cheap maskng tape - remove before the end of the day, other wise use the expensive stuff.

Controversial view!...

This may be controversial, but I reckon roller application for antifouling is not the best way. Antifouling relies on a good film thickness to keep it effective, and you simply don't get that with rollering, unless you apply lots of coats (in which case it's quicker and easier to brush-apply it in the first place). I always apply antifouling by brush, giving at least 2 generous coats, plus a third coat around the waterline and on the leading edge of the keel. This lasts for 2 years, so the effort is worthwhile.

I have found pads are better than rollers, just as quick as rollers but give a better coverage, and don’t spray as much. They fall apart after about 20 minutes use, but as they only cost pennies, what the hell

i think you'll find it depends on what type of roller you use, a real hairy one will give a better layer, I also put two coats on, with three on the waterline/bow area, but most people slip there boats every year, In fact I buy 40 litres of antifoul and put it all on, I find this lasts about 2 1/2 years in the meddy. I slip mine when it needs it. I dive under to check and clean any bits that need it.

Make sure the rollers you buy will resist the strong solvents in antifouling. Many cheap DIY ones, especially foam, last no more than a few seconds. The ones sold in DIY outlets for solvent-based paint are often not much better.
