The two established methods are lanolin based products (propguard, propshield or lanolin from the chemists), or spray on hard antifoul like Blakes "Mille".

Neither has worked very well for me, though maybe clinical preparation (sand to bare metal and chemical etch) will improve results.

I have found the only reliable way involves a mask and a scraper.
