I just checked, because I wanted to PM someone, who was logged on. 52 regulars and 67 anonymous users, of which no fewer than 12 were checking user profiles. Surely it's not right that people can check your profile without becoming registered users... or am I missing something here?

I thought that they are the registered users who did not want the fact that they are on line to be know.

Groan...not this old chestnut again.

They have to be registered users, but can elect to be non-visible for a variety of reasons in which case they show up as anonymous. For the time being, this is what I do so you will not see me logged on as tome.

Sorry John, didn't mean to be rude. I thought it was the beginning of another thread attacking anonymous posters and should have had the good manners to give you the benefit of the doubt.

Being registered means nothing, anyone can do it and there is no way of checking on them.

I was thinking more of conviviality and egality than policing them. Anyway it's all explained now. Is that Snapdragon bilge or fin?

Do a google search on "johnm ybw"

Your profile is available to anyone on the internet

Just to clarify. People who are anonymous users are those who haven't registered but are browsing the forums, or who are registered but haven't logged in. Registered users can opt to not be seen as online in their options, in which case, if they are online and have logged in, they will count towards the total of registered users online, but they won't be visible in the registered users list (even though they add to the total of registered users online)

Thanks, I've taken the boat's name out, so all we now have is that it's a C&N and I live in Essex (perhaps). What a bore that we can't use this a bit more freely, like a yacht club... though given the nature of the internet I can't really see what YBW could do to make that happen.

They can stop search engines accessing the site, but that would take away from the open nature of these forums, and stop people finding them

John

You'll probably find that you'll meet a few forumites over time, if you haven't already. So far I've met a good few, and there are many others I look forward to meeting in the future. It is like a club, and on meeting we'll introduce each other and freely share detail much as you would in a yacht club or whilst rafting alongside.

It's the open nature of the internet which I suspect makes people cautious of revealing too much detail here without establishing one-to-one contact.

It's also interesting to note that most of the cruel barracking here occurs between people who are acquainted. A bit like real life!

Best wishes
Tom

Yes I've met a few and they've been good fun - like minded. I agree with you abt what makes people careful and now Brendan has given me his demo I'm completely convinced! My message was rather wistful

Very sensible .. I used to have full details of my profile but after being bullied with the threat of a libel action by Anne fae Caister I removed all details. Tis a shame but there's a few anchors about!!

Is Caister a place?

as you were. Apparently Microsoft think it's in Norfolk. Apparently Norfolk is above Suffolk. I always wondered what was past Suffolk.
Edited by JohnM on 23/08/2004 23:32 (server time).

Absolutely. Profiles say very little, but once you meet many of the posters on these forums, you have a very different impression. Meeting people in real life is very different, and I've not met a single poster on these forums (and I've probably met over a hundred or more over the years) that I've disliked!
