I am fitting a new gypsy to a Simpson Lawrence Seatiger anchor winch. To get the old gypsy off I had to cut the rope/chain stripper due to it being seized in. I am prepared to replace it but am wondering what it is for, anybody know? Is it worth replacing?

I assume this is the metal spike like plate sitting into the central groove of the gypsy drum. Without it the chain, and particularly rope, will ride into the centre of the gypsy and then jam under the gypsy as it turns under instead of parting for the gypsy into the feeder hole for the cable locker.

As its name suggests, the stripper strips the chain from the gypsy. Without it, the chain could wrap around and snarl up. Its difficult to obtain spares for Lofrans windlasses.

The chain stripper on my windlass has been missing since before I got the boat. The chain does tend to jam in the gipsy occasionally but I have so far managed to get it free. I am sure that I am not the only one who would appreciate someone posting a picture of what the arrangement should look like. I have never actually seen one still in place!
