Anchor Splice

I am looking for some info on splicing warp to chain, to make a nice smooth running anchor cable that does not snag on rollers etc.

Does anyone know a good web site that explains this clearly with nice pics to follow?

Getting it right first time is obviously important, as is having the knowledge for re-doing the splice during the season.

Regards,

http://www.jimmygreen.co.uk/newsite/Anchorplait Splices.htm shows the Anchorplait to chain splice.

For what it's worth, I used to use this but my view is that having the chain and rope permanently attached reduces the versatility of both. A short length of chain is invaluable for avoiding chafe in attaching the boat to mooring buoys for strong wind conditions (see May YM for a good example of how chain to a buoy would have avoided a potentially very serious situation in Mallorca. Also refer the loss of the yacht Iskra on Gigha, for the same reason) A long length of rope is extremely useful at times, for shore lines, towing, etc. Having a length of chain on its end makes this type of operation very tedious.

My kedge warp is now in two separate pieces, linked with a thimble on the warp and a shackle to the chain. It is a little more difficult to get over the bow roller but the extra hassle is worthwhile in my view. My main anchor is on all chain.

I go along with this: The main anchor (25kg) is all on chain, while the second bow (20kg) anchor and the stern anchor are on 10 metres of chain with swivels attached, then anchor plait that can be attached as appropriate. This allows the anchorplait to be used in a multitude of scenarios.

I actually did the splice this weekend. 18mm 3 strand nylon on to 8mm chain (15m length) meant that it was spread over 2 links. Shrink wrap over the strands to prevate chaf reduced the flexibility a bit but I am sure that it will settle down.
The links that were provided a few weeks ago are very good and the report on the splice gives confidence.
With regard to other 'threads' over being able to seperate the rope/chain; I have not had to do this in over 20 years, and in any case have spare rope and chain for the kedge anchor and other uses.
The advantage over the rope/chain combination is weight and at present means that I do not need an anchor winch but can use the genoa winches if needs arise.
It's all an compromise, which for my type of sailing is I feel correct, but others on round world trips would possibly not like.

I missed that first time around, thanks. What is your experience of using a backsplice to the chain without a thimble? Any wear? If not, I would think that using such a method onto the D of a shackle for attachment to chain would be quite a workable alternative, giving the option of using chain and rope separately.

Thanks for that.

For the record I have just bought the boat, a 27 footer with no windlass. Pulling up all that chain would be a pain, so for now a 30m length of chain with the rest in rope will do the job just fine.

When I start to sail longer passages I will switch to all chain with a nice windlass to do the donkey work.

Regards to all.
