Hi

Planning to mark my new octoplait rode which is 50m replacing the previous 30m this will be connected to 10m of chain which I do not mark as its always deployed.

What increments do you mark you rode in 5 or 10m?

10m marks that tell me the length and 5m marks that tell me "another 5m".

Like so:
Code:
 5m ▄
10m ▄▄▄
15m ▄
20m ▄▄▄ ▄▄▄
25m ▄
30m ▄▄▄ ▄▄▄ ▄▄▄
35m ▄
40m ▄▄▄ ▄▄▄ ▄▄▄ ▄▄▄

My Octoplait on the kedge is marked with cable ties pushed through the lay. I use the same system as with my bower chain. I do not find that these cut or hurt my hands, plus they are easily avoided.

I use exactly the same system as Yngmar.

We only mark every 10 metres. One mark for ten, two marks for twenty. Anyone and everyone can understand the system. If you decide to use a more complex system, laminate a guide and stick it to the bottom of your anchor locker hatch. (I assume you’ve got one if you’re using octoplait.)

Its not what others do - its what suits you.

We mark chain and nylon every 10m - anchoring is an art - precision to 5m is really not necessary - and surely you can identify, say, 30m and guess 5 more metres (and if you get it wrong and its 4 metres or 8 metres - does it matter?).

We use cable ties on the chain and ribbon on the rope. We similarly have no issues with cable ties causing harm to hands.

5m with a green cord (find cord better than cable ties) and 10m with red - single for 10m two for 20m etc with a 5 m mark in-between. I find the intermediate 5m marks help to identify when the next 10 m are about to be deployed.
