Anchor question for North Wales members

I wouldn't worry TOO much about joining chain with riveted links. My 55 metres is joined in 2 places and never had a concern until I read dire warnings on the forum. I check them regularly and still firm after 4 years constant use.

or get a link put in by a local welder. It'll rust a bit as it wont be galvanised, but will still last for many years before you need to worry about it

Ah, thanks, that's reassuring. I thought I'd be okay so long as I use a good quality joining link.

If you lay it manually, you check it every time you use it. However, lazy gits wiv electric windlasses must sweat in fear all unknowing. Or sleep soundly & wake up somewhere else.

We were once anchored next to a young couple off Cumbrae (opposite Largs). When we awoke, they had gone. We were amazed how early they had been up. About lunchtime they returned & I enquired "where had they been that required such an early start?" He went all coy, but his swmbo blurted out that they hadn't woken until quite late & had found themselves off Hunterston Power station. It had taken until lunchtime to get back to their anchorage.
But I suspect they had forgotten that even quite small tides should be taken into account when anchoring.
