After reading all the info on Jimi’s thread about oil, it got me thinking about the air filter. Is it really necessary ?
In a car with lots of bits and flies rushing around – Yes, but in a boat where the engine is shut away, wouldn’t just a nylon mesh (ladies tights) over the air intake be adequate?

If she still had her legs in them- could be a problem I 'spose.

Petrol boats use a filter / flame arrester. Diesels (mostly turbos) have air filters to stop 'orrible things blowing up your turbo.
You do get a lot of muck in engine bay, rust and rubber dust from pulleys and fan belts for instance.

Col is right, if legs in tights then no good at all, however, my engines are Perkins turbo diesels and there is no airfilter, just a big trupet with a mertal mesh to stop big things, like ladies tights, getting sucked in. They are 1960's T6.354.

Mine also has a very coarse mesh filter, stops big things getting in but dust & small bits can still easily be sucked in. Perkins Perama engine. Have considered modifying the inlet manifold and fitting a small car type air filter from ASAP Supplies.

There is a lot of dust around at sea - but mainly sub 10 micron so air-filters don't do anything to stop them.

It's mainly there to cut down noise - just run your diesel without it and you'll find out why it's there.

IMHO if you have no air-filter fitted don't go messing around trying to put one on, if you have one, leave well alone - all ypu'll do in either case is upset the mixture.
