A motorboat anchor thread…

As I am sure many of us all do, much time has been spent over the years considering ground tackle and the best setup.

This is more of an information gathering thread, as most information on anchors out there, relates to sail, not mobo’s.

So for motorboat owners, what is your perfect set up? Let’s say just a main anchor for the most varied of seabeds possible, and varied conditions, including max length of chain on the boat.

For my T40, I have 80 metres of 8mm chain and a 25kg Mantus anchor. Which personally is probably overkill and also butt ugly. I won’t be getting the same for my next boat… However it holds tight and I sleep well with it. Also a custom snubber and a mantus swivel.

Much is said about these new gen anchors (mantus, rocna etc), good and also bad… I’m tempted just to make sure my next boat is fitted with a delta as they look so much nicer….

As I say, more of an informative thread as always interesting to see mobo specific set ups…

No real difference between a motorboats and quite a few yachts as to how to anchor, etc. Just go onto the pbo forum and read al, the anchor threads.
My sailing boat behaves more like a motorboat due to draft and windage.

more interested in getting mobo data on this one. It’s not about how to anchor, it’s getting an informative background on the anchors we use.

15 kg Bruce , they all have them .Nobody seems to bother to change them .Weights vary depending on boat size .I guess with the pocket fit it could be hassle trying to find something after reading a silly anchor thread rubbishing Bruce claws .

We have a 7.5kg stainless steel claw/Bruce anchor (similar style to portofinos) ,it came with the boat (9m mobo), it seems fine as long as you let out enough chain. No intention of changing it. I think it's a lewmar anchor.

Our previous boat also had a stainless claw/Bruce anchor from lewmar, that was also fine.

totally twisting my point, so helpful. I base my anchor choice on safety hence what I have now. But I can’t find the need to justify things further to you.

That is exactly cosmetics over safety/function.

PS. We binned a Delta which came with our new to us boat as it was much more difficult to set than previous anchors, and replaced by a new gen one which has been used successfully hundreds of times since

nope you were. I wasn’t going cosmetic over safety. But id take cosmetic and safety over if it worked. But hey, you will just read it how you wish to grab a chance to have a pop which is often what happens on this forum. It used to be a decent place to post. I can understand why so many have left.

I would stay well clear of a Delta anchor - my experience with them is that they are useless in anything other than thick mud. Stick with the Mantus/Rocna etc
I use a 15Kg rocna with a 10mm chain - that digs in really well in sea grass.

I haven't got a very good photo example of how bad the Delta is.
The Delta is a "ploughing" anchor - and thats what it does - plough - and it keeps ploughing.
This is "kind of" what I mean.
This photo was taken a few hours after setting but it keeps going.



But a Rocna is totally different.
This photo was taken after several days - you can see the chain marks on the sand from the boat swinging around it.

Arn’t they like women in many ways ?
You can get a nice balance of pretty one ( to you beautiful in your eyes etc ) and functional ie intelligent one etc .

There are some pretty stylish solutions out there for anchor s .


What are you inferring , that these are rubbish pilots ?

I put a 10kg Kobra on mine as the standard 12kg Britany was bloody hopeless. Sets quickly and holds well for what I want, unlikely to ever anchor overnight as the slightest breeze has the boat veering constantly from side to side, must cover thousands of miles on its swinging mooring during the course of a season. The only downside was having to re-jig the bow roller to accept the non standard anchor. 12m of 8mm chain spliced to 100m of 14mm 3 strand

After years of Sealines with Delta anchors and two Traders with their own copy of a CQR (I think(), we swapped to a Rocna. Experience of overnight anchoring with the Deltas and CQRs was not good. We dragged a few times and lost confidence. The Rocna on our Trader 54 is 44 Kg as opposed to the 27 kg of the trader original. We find "when it`s in it`s in."

I changed my 30kg Bruce for a 33kg Rocna a couple of years ago, it's miles better and I do sleep better! It's attached to 75m of 12mm chain

I have a 6.5kg delta. It came with the boat. With 10m of 8mm chain and about 30m of rope rode it will readily drag in light winds when anchored in sand. I’ve since added a further 15m of chain with a C clip and it’s much better. I‘m now happy at anchor in good weather, typically in around 6m of water with all of the chain out.

However - I would not trust this setup for anything other than fair weather anchoring. I‘ve not been impressed with the delta anchor and if I was going to contemplate worse weather/overnight/deeper I would replace all of the chain (the C-clip weakens the rode), and fit a rocna.
