I have an interesting situation right now. SWMBO has a new job near Reading and its a very difficult drive from where we live. Dont want to commit to moving house yet until we know she's settled in but dont like the idea of the drive each way especially when the winter arrives.
During our leisurely cruise to Oxford and back we got round to discussing options, including renting a small flat but, believe it or not, she actually seems quite keen on us getting a big enough boat to park up in a mid-thames marina as a temporary 'pied a l'eau'.
This seems like a whizzing way for me to get something bigger than the P32 to play with but the question is are we likely to be able to buy a suitable boat for around £50-60k?
Does anyone have useful input on what might be a suitable boat?

Gotta think in terms of a nice Broom Continental or Ocean 37. Disregard asking prices, prices being fetched are far lower than those asked. Even Crowns are now changing hands at around £60k or so.

Seeing Alistair's post inc' picture of Princess 38; .. there is one on the Thames which may very well be available shortly.
Husband has recently died and wife knows nothing about boats.

PM me if you want to take it further.

If you are considering living aboard for weeks on end, then accommodation has to be the main consideration. So forget flybridge/aft cockpit models. Dutch steel has a lot to offer in terms of space and are good value these days. And, if the £ sinks no further against the € consider buying in Holland or Belgium. Your money will go a lot further.

I agree! Take a week off and look around boat yards in Holland!

For me looking for a boat in Holland was the best holiday ever!

I would say the more boats I saw the more I knew what type of boat I wanted!

I always thought of my boat as a place to live on board not just a plaything.

Living a board I would say it would be useful to have:
City water - no need to use tanks you plug in to mains?
Stand up shower is spreate compatmenyt - we do not want the head to get wet!
Good size galley - unless eating out all the time.
Mains power.
Good size double bed
And the most important nice dry boat!

Well do you want to buy my boat?

Tom

Tony

I do but if I sell her I can dream of a new one and have a month looking around at all those new flashy things.

And have lots of sea trials.

Tom

ps I have heard that on some new boats you even take your shoes off !

to name a few

If you contact "Boten" magazine they send you a free(recent) copy to see if you like it.

But....there's not much good/sensibly priced stuff on sale in Nl/Belgium 'til autumn: every broker I've met does most business sept-january & "Boten " magazine has mainly sports boats for sale at present.

If you go viewing: van der valk hotels are mostly extremely good value & close to main roads/motorways, food always excellent.

What about an early Aqua Star 38?

A bloke had 1 on my old moorings, it was very nice inside
and a very quality boat outside.

Thanks

B**g*r. Having bought a boat in Holland earlier this year, I have recently deleted all the Dutch brokers I was in touch with from my 'Favorites' list. However, I would go with most of those suggested by Andyball plus perhaps BCL, De Valk,......
Sorry, brains gone dead but there are dozens of them. Assume you are using Google or something similar. If 'motor boats' or 'yacht brokers' doesnt produce what you want, try putting in some of the manufacturers eg Valkkruiser, Kokkruiser, Molenkruiser, Linnsen, Boorncruiser, BWS etc. This should throw up not only individual boats but brokers names as well. Good luck.

Buying a boat in the Low Countries

PEER TO PEER
In Belgium and Holland, everyone and their dog buys/sells their boat through the internet

http://www.botenbank.nl/ , predominately raggies
http://www.botentekoop.nl/ predominately stinkies

Go to the local ANWB shop (ANWB is AA and RYA combined into one), if there is no ANWB shop, go to the VVV (tourist shop). There you can get a model contract for second hand boats, just fill in the blanks and tick of the boxes, and you've got a sound contract.

BROKERAGE
The main brokers use the YBW.COM "buying a boat" section anyway, so need to go looking for that.

Asking prices are always 10% above the actual price wanted :) Yu never know, someone might be daft enough to pay it. My boat was quated at 740.000 BEF, and I bought it for 585.000 :))))

The Botenbank has a historical price list, where, if you sell a boat, as afterservice, they request you to fill out the actual price paid
http://www.botenbank.nl/boatbank/index.html

130.000€ (asked, so more like 110.000€)

85.000€ gets you this 1997 boat

99.000€, 1995 boat
