I guess those reed beds make good habitat for ambush predators like pike.

The river has a lot of Pike ..... we can be sitting out on pontoon / bbq and suddenly water 'boils' - its Pike attacking the small fish. Our channel is like a kindergarten for fish ... teeming with it in summer.
Pike average 2 - 4kgs .. but odd ones get caught well over that.

The Russians have a really great way of preparing Pike for the table. They extract all from the skin, remove all bones and then mix the meat with grated veg such as carrot ... stuff the skin and sew up the join. Cook and then place on table for all to take a slice from ... its very good.
They do same with Carp - but I'm not so keen on Carp.

But as I hear - Pike actually are not that big a predator of Ducklings ... if they have good supply of fish / frogs etc. - then they are supposed to leave Ducklings alone.

My ex wife was from a lakeside village on Lough Derg the biggest lake on the Shannon. I used to troll for pike in an open clinker built lake boat and the most effective bait I had was an artificial mouse. We regularly caught pike up to around 15Kg. My then MIL used to bake then in the oven wrapped with streaky rashers. They were delicious. She cooked perch the same way but they were difficult to eat they were so boney.

There used to be a steady flow of German anglers coming to fish for pike on the Shannon in the 70's and 80's. They'd be disappointed if they hooked a good trout when trolling for pike. They'd get the local bar/restaurant to cook some of the pike for them and they'd have boxes of them packed in ice in the boot of the car going back to Germany.
