Sladen's 'Elfin', at 65' long and 6'6" wide, supposed to be the largest wreck in the Lake. Coordinates removed as it's an easily diveable depth I don't want the wreck to be looted.
Don't know the name of this one, but it was T-boned by Esperance in the early 70's and sank. It's...
The Wellington was Loch Ness (not Bowness). :):)
As for Windermere- I can guarantee that there are no planes on the lake bed (unless they're model ones.) Have found one of the lighters they used to remove the munitions from the Sunderlands though.
Their other boat 'Merlin' (with mounting for Bren gun) may be found here. (part way across in a straight line from the end of Belle isle to Miller Ground)
Edited to add: And before anyone says anything-I was in the 10 MPH (knot) zone!
A good sheltered anchorage is round the back of Belle Isle, to the south of the western most of the 'Lilies of the Valley'. Make sure you know the safe channels in and out though! I'm also fairy sure that there are some cheap visitor mooring buoys round there- wardens at Ferry Nab will give you...
Most battery chargers have a limited life with very few surviving past 5 years. You may even have one duff battery which won't hold charge. I've found that if they've been completely flattened (happened when battery charger failed) that they were fit for scrap only, even though they were only 18...
Place looks a mess and is still cordoned off by H & S because of asbestos roof, so staff unsure of number of boats totalled, but probably won't be more than first thought, although others will have smoke and water damage. Inflatables all melted though and both toilet block and boatshed may be...
Most of the raggies on our marina are pretty good, but there are some who don't think that being able to maneouvre under power has anything to do with sailing. There's one on our pontoon who hits the front of our, and just about every boat on our side of the pontoon, almost every time he goes...
Dr Depth will do the 3-D mapping, but haven't bought it yet. Would appreciate another Elfin picture. Shame it was scuttled, but have a few more steam launch wrecks plotted and another one on my list of things to search for.
Great link, Jim.
The bottom of Windermere is anything but flat and boring. I'll be doing a three dimensional model when I've finished scanning all the Lake sometime over the next few years. But for now, just some side scan sonar stills with first, a bit of geography.
And now for a bit of...
I wouldn't bother with the VHF course if Windermere is going to be your only location. Although the wardens monitor channel 16, the usual method is to ring them on the mobile, or 999 Coastguard outside hours.
No boat test needed and the e-mail the Wardens sent out about the byelaw changes copied below-
The main changes to the Windermere Registration byelaw are:
• a minimum age of 16 years for those registering a powered vessel;
• a calculator for registration fees, ensuring the fees received do not...
