@peteK - I wasn't able to do an experiment with changing the oil as the boat is out of the water for the winter. With my boat to change the gearbox I need to take the rudder off to move the shaft backwards to get clearance, so if that didn't solve it then I'd need to lift out again.

Hi, thanks for the replies. Gear box oil was last changed 3 seasons ago when I got the engine serviced professionally. Most years I’ve just done the engine oil and filters and changed the coolant. I haven’t checked the oil level yet, I suppose that I should have started there.

If you cut of the old screws/bolts you could then poke some narrow wire into the space behind to see how large it is. If it is quite small then you could inject some thickened epoxy mixture into it and once set then screw into that. Perhaps initially put in some water with food coloring to...

I have a Contessa 32 and Tinker and usually carry it inflated on deck ahead of the mast. If the transom is up close to the mast deck ring the anchor locker is still accessible.
