I wouldn’t insult the engineer by offering to supply my own parts, would you do the same to the garage when servicing your car ? In fact a few I’ve used over the years refuse to fit parts they haven’t supplied and I don’t blame them. That’s probably why you say it’s hard to find a good engineer.
What are you trying to achieve ?
Something as critical as an injector would be the last thing I would mess with having witnessed the damage it can do to your engine, those kind of tasks are best left to the professionals.
As soon as prices drop so does production, it’s then easy to charge more again so prices are very easily controlled and the government are happy with that as they don’t want us to use diesel and they are keen to keep prices high to collect more in tax.
That’s the reason I sold my boat, I got fed up with being told there’s no space for visitors and didn’t want to return to my home berth every night, for me boating was about going and visiting different places.

Get a quote from CAT or Cummins and you will be surprised, especially when cooler service required, there’s plenty of diyers out there who believe a service is an oil and filter change every couple of years, there’s others who use main dealers to do to the service schedule, I’m certainly glad...

One task that’s easier is draining the oil, you don’t get to pull the bung over a pit with your boat, also impellers that are fitted in the most awkward to get at places. Have worked in both sectors and can assure you its not simpler.
