You want to talk project boats

…What I mostly took from this video is that I'm probably going to spend the next decade chasing the bloody thing, as it's likely to be in the same class as us for a lot of events, and he's a very good sailor with an extensive list of very good sailors to crew for him....
How does that work? Aren’t you racing a modern boat? Genuine question, I’ve no idea how racing categories work but I would’ve assumed a JPK would not be in the same class as a 70s IOR boat.

Depends on the rating. We race against 70s IOR boats all the time, splits are only really done by rating, so if they rate within about 30-40 points we'll often end up in the same class.

Although they tend to be significantly longer to rate similarly. Will be interesting to see if this boat rates close enough to us to be mostly in the same class or not. Might be a bit slow, but the S&S 41 we race against a lot is close to us.

If his mountain of crap went on our for sale forum…he would make a fortune
He was talking about crewing that boat in the seventies....so he must be our age....but doesn’t look it😡

Great post. I have only ever seen one of these, alongside in Vannes about 10 years ago, our local correspondents may be able to confirm if it is still there.
There’s a fully functional one, at least to external appearances, at the River Yar boatyard. Afloat, that is, on their pontoon. We go past her every trip out. I have never seen anyone on board, or seen her absent from her berth.

My word. What a very ambitious project; I think I’m going to enjoy watching this one.

I’ve always had a soft spot for these S&S Contessa 38s. John Roome’s Flycatcher was such a beautiful boat.

Jeremy Rogers certainly got stitched up by Nautor over this, and in answer to the query on the video, only 6 were built before it was kyboshed. Maybe it did him a favour as it pushed him to work with Doug Peterson and all the success that he enjoyed with those boats. Gumboots, the contessa 35 in which Jeremy won the One Ton Cup, Moonshine, the Contessa 43 in which he was part of the victorious British Admirals Cup team in 1977, and the Rogers 39 Eclipse in which he was second in the 79 fastnet behind tenacious and the first of the Admirals Cup boats.

Not at all the same thing. That was David Alan-Williams design from the 80s: a sort of scaled up contessa 32.

I’m not sure that John Corby can be right about the Rogers version of the design having a smaller keel than the Swan 38. Looking at sailboatdata for the two, the Contessa is 1.3 Tonnes lighter, yet has 400kg more in the ballast and the same draught. Haven’t seen the lines plan of the contessa, mind you.

In the Swan, the rear “cabin” is created by there being a bridge deck aft of the hatch, (where John shows the life raft locker to be) which allows a modicum of headroom across the boat abaft the companionway. Personally, I can’t see that it’s worth modifying the contessa that way. The resulting cabin is a very pokey arrangement, and I’m not a fan of how exposed those bridge decks make you whilst entering and leaving the cabin when it’s rough, not to mention an even taller companionway ladder. Can’t see what’s wrong with two quarterberths myself, but it’s John Corby’s boat, and whatever he does I’m
sure it will be fabulous.IMG_6177.jpegIMG_6176.jpeg

This one is especially interesting to follow, as its a professional doing the work, always nice to see how they go about things.

He's already talking about moving the spreaders back a bit, I'm surprised it isn't getting the whole outboard shrouds, IRC rig treatment.

Right at the end he mentions that he got an IRC cert. Looking at the data it's clearly a holding one, as it doesn't have an updated weight, updated overhangs, or sail data after 2002... But it was something of a relief to see it come in a 0.934. Can't see it varying by more than 10 points either way with weighing and new sail data. Shouldn't have to race the thing too often!
