Mystique
If you look back on this thread when I joined the discussion and started to ask questions, you can see what care I took. I made the point that I was wanting to learn.

I was then told something that did not make sense to me and so asked a question about it... this got the ball rolling with Brendan and all the old bashing stuff came in. I really did try to get a discussion out of it.

I was even challanged for having the nerve to ask the question - even though the question was a simple factual one.

Please look back - anyone can and see how it goes wrong:-

I am still having a problem with this.

On my boat 30 foot vis means I have no more than 5 to 10 foot in front of the bow.

At 5 knots, I am travelling that 10 foot in about 3 seconds and that mean that i cannot turn to get out of the way of the buoy!!!!! in practice I may only have 5 foot and about 1.5 seconds!!!!

So I do not see how I have the time to avoid the object I am aiming at - even if I react instantly, I would still hit it.

So can someone please explain to me how, without radar travelling at 5 knots you should head for a buoy?????

A totally confused YM theorist waiting to take his practical....

I think that is a perfectly reasonable question put from a clearly defined student.

The answer from Brendan, in the very next post was:-
-------------------------------
Without starting another arguement! Don't you think the RYA syllabus and examiners don't know what they are about. If you plan a route which takes you across commercial routes or likely to put you in path of other boats without taking necessary precautions, you'd fail.
-------------------------------------------

Then it takes off!

You know, when I did my YM course and exam, I asked a lot of questions and found myself disagreeing with some assumptions etc. The examiner welcomed the approach and always answered me fully and to my satisfaction. In fact I was praised for being a great student.

I learnt a lot on that course but still realised I had a lot to learn.

Anyone following my contributions from the beginning on this thread would see the same process - I was puzzeld and so did some calcs and asked the question. The immediate response to that was a post challanging my right to ask and away the thread went with a typical outcome.

A better response would have been to answer the question.

Anyone who, in 10m vis., has no lookout on the bow and is travelling at 5 kts with no Radar deserves to hit the buoy, spot on, and sink as rapidly as possible....and with a bit of luck they will give up boating to the greater benefit of the rest of us.

I agreed with StephenH because he made the point that I have been making throughout. So there is nothing he states there that i have not already stated.

I would add that I think the point applies even with someone on the bow because by the time the message is conveyed the time advantage is all but lost and even if there was no delay in communicating you would probably still hit it.

All i have to ask you to do Fireball and co is to practice what you preach and head out wheni vsibility is down to 30 foot without radar to do some buoy hopping - there would be a good chance that that would have a permanent effect in reducing the number of messages on this forum /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

In the meatime what you can do is stop looking at this thread - nobody is forcing you to come here /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Fireball - i see that you are Chichester based.
I actually plan to be out this weekend in taht area on my maiden trip - so maybe see you on the water somewhere ...... /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Likewise ...

and I'll make sure I'm not sailing this weekend .... and if I do go out on the water I'll keep an eyeout for you ... cos I'll be racing and under sail.... /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Only a complete idiot would head out in 30 foot vis, but since when did that stop you.

FWIW, I've only been on the water for 40 years (but then I'm only 40...), but buoy-hopping still seems to be the best way of getting home when it gets gloomy

I do feel a lot of you chaps jumped on Gludy i feel his
original query was valid, and not argumentitive,i know
where he is coming from, also Sun Coast said 6knots!
no problem in open water, but when navigating at close
quarters ie 10m viz, Gludy has a case.
Me you would hear my fog horn every few seconds!!
OH! and before you start on me, I would only do 6knots
in open water with my radar on

"cos I'll be racing and under sail.... "

next you are going to claim that that gives you some special rights!!!!!

May even try to establish a position as a stand on vesel then?

Well rememebr I am bigger than you and without a lookout on the bow may not even see you slip under the ow or hear the crunch ........ /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

And I have only been on the water a fraction of that time and would still buoy hop when it gets Gloomy if I have lost radar etc. I actually had to do it late last year right up the Solent when i had no radare or plotter because of a water in the elctronics problem.

However, as you and I would not want to be out in 30 foot vis - there is no difference between us.

The reason I'm jumping on Gludy, is that however I tried to say 5 Knots is too fast, he didn't understand what I was saying. Quite what's difficult about "slow down" I don't know.

I think it's his pedantic style, just brings out the worst in folks (me included...).

Rick but I will not be confining myself to Chi harbour - I will be all over the Solent, maybe Poole and area doing a lot of testing and snagging stuff to test the boat out - so maybe its best if you shut the Solent down ...... ????
