More like a 1000Nm worth of defending ... seriously the discussion never got going.
I wanted to openly explore the main issues of what to do in such a situation tking into account the real world variables in the hope that we would have all learnt something from it.
For example if there were a 2 knot current in the direction of travel, then with just 3 knots log speed, you a re travelling at 5 knots but this speed can change around headlands and you have no real chack on your SOG because you have no chart plotter etc. So to you, you are doing 3 knots, in fact you could be doing 6 knots and in fact a dark shape with a few seconds warning could appear and you hit it.
ts worse than another boat which should have sound signals - in flat calm the buoys often do not.
This is not theory - its the nature of the beast in practice and all i wanted to do was to develop a idiscussion on it. .... I am not allowed to on this forum.
