Re: Round N+1 with Gludy about the blind nav.

"However, you must have done 1000nm's-worth of asking on this topic."

More like a 1000Nm worth of defending ... seriously the discussion never got going.

I wanted to openly explore the main issues of what to do in such a situation tking into account the real world variables in the hope that we would have all learnt something from it.

For example if there were a 2 knot current in the direction of travel, then with just 3 knots log speed, you a re travelling at 5 knots but this speed can change around headlands and you have no real chack on your SOG because you have no chart plotter etc. So to you, you are doing 3 knots, in fact you could be doing 6 knots and in fact a dark shape with a few seconds warning could appear and you hit it.

ts worse than another boat which should have sound signals - in flat calm the buoys often do not.

This is not theory - its the nature of the beast in practice and all i wanted to do was to develop a idiscussion on it. .... I am not allowed to on this forum.

How accurate can the CG radio fix be?

Not very, judging by their inability to locate boats with a jammed carrier on ch 16

point of order, new thread

I think You are asking a bit much of a now very very long thread. The thred started with powerskippers about actual YM candidates, and others discussed that. I think i raised the contour following thing and you pondered on the practicalities. At that point (or this if you want) the thread had drifted a long way, yet rooted in the title Yachtmaster so quite understandable that many said "yes but it's an excercise" even though you wanted to move it on.

This is yet another example of the bad aspect of dateslip. People feel they have to stay on the same thread whereas the could and often should start a new thread far more offten, imho.

Re: point of order, new thread

Theoretically did I drive into the fog or did I wake up and the fog was there? If I drove in I'd turn around and drive out. If I woke up and it was foggy (down to 10mtrs) I'd stay where I was.
