I'd recommend contact the UKSA www.uksa.org they'd be able to tell you all you want to know and more. Moose one would do well to go there (imho) as he seems very good at the helm. We spoke to Gail the course advisor and found her incredibly helpful.

No. I show'd im a pic of us towing a fourty ft stinky. Doing about 8 knots. He had never heard of anything going that fast, let alone being towed.

I had said that is navigatory method was a bit crap for a stinky, bouncing along at 20 knots with compass thingy going round in circles and boat going round in crcles every time you took eyes away to look for chart and pencil and rubber, which were rolling around on the kitchen floor, except for the Bretton plotter which had gone down a hole and was now in the engine room. And measuring tidal drift was a bit of a waist of time with all this going on and a bit difficult anyway with the plotter down in the bilge. So much better to get auto pilot GPS and plotter.

We spent all night working out how to do all the stuff in the RYA YM book, so now boat related "sums" are no problem, it's just all the other stuff.
