Probably because you've never mentioned it before, or have I missed it? Not that it matters, on here your just as likely to get slagged, man or woman! I know!! Mind you it's nice to have a female opinion! You still do not say definitively that you are a woman, you only suggest it, come on bare all! Not literally! might get a few of these old codgers excited! better not!

Happy belated birthday big boy!

I take my dog out for a walk on my bike .. And I have had several crass comments from other dog owners about not cycling on the pavement .. now the interesting thing is that these dog owners is
1) I have never seen before & I never see them again.
2) I have been doing the same route nearly every day on my bike, at the same time, with the dog for the last 8 years
3) Invariably the complainant has his own dog completely out of control.

Could there be some analogy here between raggie & stinkie problems?

God, you know how to wound don't you. The days when my laying anything bare would attract attention are well and truely passed. Still, I have my memories......

As for my gender, it has never been an issue here or at work (where I was refered to as Dr) and only became one when you started to talk about me rather than to me, and thus used the specific impersonal pronoun. Your enthusiasm for femail opinion on boating matters also has me worried - why should it be any different to that expressed by a man? Are we not just boaters? Too often in professional circles I have seen the throwaway 'femail perspective' argument used to diminish the views of women. Now you wouldn't be guilty of that , would you. No of course you wouldn't.

As to anonymity on these forums, ari, chippie and others have, of course, the right to give a much or a little detail about themselves as they wish. I seem to recall a thread on this subject way back when the consensus was that some personal detail served to enrich the board. I agree and feel an obligation to fellow contributors, at least to allow them to put the views I am expressing into some sort of perspective. What puzzles me is why individuals would object. No-one is asking for addresses, telephone numbers, medical records or somesuch. Can you chaps enlighten me? Why so shy?

Finally oldgit, I fall somewhere between the two (questions on shopping, of course!)

You are awful (all of you) But I like you!

I must confess I find your use of the abberation 'femail' (sic) quite charming in relation to the forum - or did you intend it that way ;-)

Re: Boomer\'s sex (again)

Ooh, I forgot - Boomer is female.

However...the surprise hereabouts arises from the fact that never ever does Boomer make other than a traditionally male style of comment. I refer to detailed knowledge of jump leads, hardheaded comments about fixing toilets, prop calculations and so on.

None of the above ilustrates anything more than stereotypical assumptions by me. Except...there were also references to "sheep shagging". This is a little bit beyond "stereotypical", no?

Either way, Boomer also has expertise in the firled of clinical psychology, so can hopefully untangle this, and/or thye rest of us.

Well if I was a bloke I certainly would not want folks thinking I was a woman. Then again if I was a woman I would not want them thinking I was a man. Maybe a Puff......!!???

Why restrain it to the inland waterways? I once collected a rod and line whilst negotiating Shoreham Harbour entrance. Once drama was over (it was a bit rough) and in the calm of the harbour I retrieved the rod and was pleased to find it had captured a sizable Bass. The irate fisherman collected rod later but I was able to keep a straight face whilst claiming to know nothing about the Bass. Tasted wonderful!

Ari.

After many years of owning motor cruisers in and around the Solent (cruising to C.I. West Country etc), I finally sold our last boat (Sealine S37) in February, and vowed never to be ripped off by the Marine Industry again. Whilst cruising, especially in the busier areas of the Solent, I was frequently glared at, and abused by yachtsmen, even though I was (Scouts honour) VERY considerate with regards to wash etc. My view was/is that most yachtsmen are rude and intolerant people who think only they should be on the sea. Now guess what, I've been seduced by the sea again, but now I'm retired cannot afford another £150K motorboat. So I'm in the process of buying a new 32' (whisper it) sailing boat, and taking professional sailing lessons etc.- I'm really looking forward to it having sailed many a dinghy in the past. Turncoat?, traitor?, probably!, but I cannot face coming down to a smaller power boat (did that once before and it didn't work) when I can pick up a brand new, fully loaded Jeanneau 32 for £55K. I guess the most interesting bit of this change of direction will be to actually see/experience for myself the supposed disruption to sailing that we motorboaters evidently cause - is it all hype from a bunch of winging raggies, or will I too end up shouting obsenities at the "stinkpots"?. I sincerely hope that all is not as black as is often painted. Boat does not arrive until next March, bit I'll keep you posted. Meantime has anyone out there done the same thing? .... any comments on the subject?. Does our "hooligan" behaviour really cause major problems?

Boomer,

Tend to agree with you, but the problem seems so deep rooted, it's going to take a long time for this to die away (if it ever does).. Nobody is blameless frankly, but we should all look inwards and try to take some more responsibility. Until we do, incidents will happen, blood will boil and this site will continue to have similar postings. See my posting above - I'm coming over to the other side after many years of motor cruising!!. I intend to try to be tolerent!

Re: Grammer........

Report Back

boatone - I wish I had meant it that way. Might even have been regarded as something of a wit. No, I am unduly influenced by the Daily Mail which has a Femail section and now resolve to go back to the Daily Telegraph. Looking back, I can't spell 'as' either!

hlb - no Puff me. More the Magic Dragon

tcm - at least you own up to your stereotyping tendencies. It can take some time to get a man to recognise this. But I fail to see how 'detailed comments' indicate any 'traditional style' male or female. With the greatest of respect, might I suggest we (I mean YOU) are guilty of confusing content with presentation? I am, however, extremely flattered at the thoroughness of your research. You might care to add to what you already know that I can (and have had to) a) sharpen a chain-saw
b) rod the drains and c) read a map. And is there not the slightest hint of prudishness about you? Whilst I am not yet in the ladette class, I do try and stay contemporary and tend to regard anything I hear on terrestial television as being within acceptable bounds (depending on company of course)

If you buy a new Ferrari 360 or a new Yamaha R1, you dont expect the dealer to give you tuition on how to use it before you lob it down the road at the first roundabout? Why should boat dealers be obliged to do any different? And, in any case, call me a Luddite but what sort of a problem do we have here? Are there dozens of collisions between motorboats and yachts every year? Are there dozens of innocent lives being lost? No.
The point is that, if you coerce the dealers into giving some compulsory tuition before they hand over the boat, you're going to get 2 things. Firstly, in order to get the agreement of the dealers to do it, the training requirements are going to be very minimal and, secondly, in order to keep costs to the minimum, the teaboy is going to end up doing the training. There are a lot of small dealers out there who simply wont have the wherewithal or the skills to carry out even minimal training so you're going to get a large variation in standards as well
IMHO, the present situation of encouragement rather than coercion is far better. For sure the RYA, BMIF or whoever could probably do more but we have to get to a point where every new boater WANTS to get trained rather than is forced, maybe grudgingly, to get trained and you can only do that through education

Great posting Nicho. Its a shame we are going to have to wait till next year to get your feedback, unless you are already forming a perception from your RYA training weekends.

Lets here from anyone who has made the transition from one to the other
