I was on the Dart a few weeks ago.

Trickling downstream on the Dartmouth side just about to pass the end of a long pontoon of boats.

There was a yacht in the middle of the river turning towards me. Seeing that the end berth was free and a fellow yachtie waiting to take the ropes I realised that this was where he was heading, and that I was in his way (being directly between him and the berth he was heading for). So I opened the throttle to pull clear out of his way. Whereupon his mate on the pontoon started dancing the hornpipe and yelling at me so now clear of his mate coming alongside I enquired what his problem was to which I was informed that I was about to "throw him off the pontoon with my wash" and was "acting like a prat".

So what was this mightly Wash-Hog that I was throwing up such huge waves with, Sunseeker 60 perhaps, Azimut 85 maybe?

Nope, a 2.5 metre Avon inflatable tender with a little outboard!

Yachties and their wash problems eh? Bless 'em...

Another money spinner for Sunseeker??

This has obviously got beyond a joke now and there's nothing left but to give yachties something to really moan about. First thing tomorrow morning I will be down in Poole demanding that Sunseeker add a small lightweight (sunseeker branded, obviously) set of torpedos to the options list. Any thoughts what they'd charge for them? (Naturally if you buy a Leopard they won't charge for such extras, in fact did you remember to ask for them.......?). It'd certainly liven up a Sunday afternoon cruise, I can imagine it being quite fun after a couple of hours in the pub.......

I'm afraid it was one of those events where I pottered on down the river, and spent the next 24 hours thinking "What I should have said to him was....."

That\'s a relief

I thought you were accusing us yotties of having problems washing, which is a vile calumny. Crossing the Atlantic we washed every week whether we needed to or onot!

Going thru percee passage the other day after 1.5 hours in a F6 getting wet managed to get up to 25 knots and had to pass a raggie in the passage and pissed myself laughing all the way past him thinking about all the crap on the forum about WASH etc etc not that my wash would have bothered him in the weather we were experiencing.

Had funny looks from all the others on board wondering what I was laughing at.

Dom

I am boating again ;-)

You have my sympathy ari. Your ego is so near the surface it is nearly exposed and I have noticed in the past that any hint of criticism directed toward you brings you out in a verbal rash. Whilst you are getting a life, get some treatment.

ps why the total lack of detail in your profile? Whilst I accept this is your absolute right, I do wonder what you are hiding! Are you interested in some private counselling?

Lighten up Boomer. I take exception to your implication that those of us that dont wish to publish details have something to hide.
Ari's story wasnt a rehash of the old argument, more an amusing picture of an absurdity.

Cheers

Didn't you notice he had a spilt career, in psychology, so he should know about how much he could upset people with these kind of statements. But ...........

I suspect deep down yotties and stinkies like their little battles and war of words. As long as it causes no real harm, I think the crassness exhibited by some yotties and some stinkies gives something for us to winge about!

My latest was last Wednesday evening coming into Portsmouth, where I was motorsailing 10m outside the shipping channel. Anyway at the second red buoy a stinkie came through between me and the buoy on full plane, passed within a couple of meters of me on one side and the buoy on the other, kicked up a huge wash which sent us rolling around, then proceded to stop 100m later just at the harbour entrance to dangle fenders at various heights, by which time we had to stop as there were ferries and other things coming the other way. Then it charged off into Gunwarf Quay without getting QMH approval.

Great fun. A bit of wash is no problem when such crassness provides so much entertainment!

sympathies on the kicking around.

I think that a few powerboat dealers (and just a few) could resolve a lot of issues. In Port Solent, for example, some salesmen challenge the bravado of first-time buyers ("nar, you don't need training, do you?!!") and many others are promised training which never materializes. Marine Sales have been guilty of this on several occassions from people whom I have met - the training issue is often ignored or skirted when selling a big powerboat. Nor do dealers have any financial incentive to do a proper handover as the terms are often that the boat must be fully paid for before it leaves the factory. Oh, Peters do have a training boat- that's the one that rumbles up and down Chichester harbour at 12knots pulling a massive wake past moored sailboats which actually have someone up the flaming mast. However, MBY reports that there is no problem whatsoever, so that's alright...

Yes, I think the time has come for training. Yottie and Stinkie crassness is usually amusing, but it can be dangerous.

Ive only been sailing a yacht as skipper for 4 seasons, and I regard myself a beginner. There is so much to learn, but thats part of the challenge. My acknowledgement of lack of experience means I err on the side of caution, yet I still make silly mistakes. I'm sure that properly handing a powerboat of some size in challenging conditions requires different but equivalent skills.

I know it is an anathma to many, but I think the time has come for compulsory training for all boats above a certain size / displacement.

It's that compulsory bit again, and it would need policing. Hell, this morning we've had someone around from the council paid from all those very important taxes, and enquired about the er London in bloom competition and wd we like to enter? of course, I let rip with some far rightwing stuff and toldim he shd be sacked as a total waster of loot, 100 bleeding grand in rates etc. etc.

Ahem. anyway, could the MCA insist that all boats (sold through dealers) are sold with a form to fill in, to be signed by the dealer and part of papers all about training and checking the familairuty of skipper with the boat controls, and then another signoff from the dealer when the delaer says yes he knows wot he is doing? the bonus is that there's no policing needed except by the MCA of a few dealers, and the insurance peeps givem a good kicking if thiv not done the form correctly or signed it bogusly.

I do think that the onus is on the dealers to slightly force the issue, and some are getting away very lightly when flogging monster boats on the basis that "it's easy peasy!".
