I am looking to print a full size test sample of the proposed name for my new boat so I can check the visual effect.

Does any one know of a downloadable program with various fonts that I could print a full side banner of the proposed name so I could tape it to the boat to check the visual effect

I've just used MS word before. if i didn't have the correct font i found it on the web and downloaded it.....

I only had a a4 printer and wanted the font bigger so enlarged it on a photocopier

if you have a lateral photo of the boat, why not put it up on one of the free or cheap graphics programs, and overlay the photo ("layers") with the name in various fonts, so that you can visualise it.

Quicker, cheaper, and can test large numbers of typefaces (not fonts /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif ) more easily than sticking bits of paper on the boat.

NB fonts do not scale infinitely and still look good. So a font designed for normal print say up to 24 points will look awful if you make it a foot high. There are fonts which are designed for big size.

Much of the problem is letter spacing. This means that, if you do blow up an everyday font, you can improve it by "kerning" which means adjusting the space between letters. For example if you have say "AV" as consecutive letters, the diagonal gutter between the letters will look much too big on a font blown up from a normal type size.

My local signmaking company was perfectly happy to show me mockups and then they computer cut a sticky stencil for the one we agreed upon, all for a pretty modest fee - so long ago I can't remember how much. I used the stencil to paint the name, and it was really good.
