12m yacht sank this morning in Port St Mary, Isle of Man, apparently en route from Liverpool to Ardrossan. Believed to be coming into PSM for shelter when it picked up pot markers. 3 crew were taken off but the boat went down, cause as yet unknown.

Watch out for those lobster pots out there.

edit; just found this from the CG.

“Callout: At 05:58hrs this morning the team were asked to respond to a vessel in difficulty near the Carrick in Bay Ny Carrickey, along side Port St Mary Lifeboats. Due to the proximity of the vessel to the Carrick Rock and the onshore heavy swell, the crew of the stricken vessel were taken onto PSM Lifeboat and brought safely ashore. The vessel was left at anchor, but unfortunately broke free and was swept across the Carrick Rock and blown back into the water where she sunk soon after. No debris has been spotted yet.
Well done to Port St Mary Lifeboat for a difficult rescue with three lives saved.
Port Erin Coastguard Team back on station and ready for duty 10:30hrs.”

I originally thought the prop shaft may have been pulled out but obviously not, did she lose the keel in a subsequent grounding as a result of being entangled with the pots?

Obvious from the AIS track that she came in to the bay and lost control (snagged pot markers) around 04:30 this morning. Would have been pitch black and choppy - almost no chance of spotting them and the bay is littered with pots. Sad that the boat was lost, grateful to the PSM Lifeboat heroes, it must have been a tricky shout getting the crew off safely that close to the Carrick in conditions this morning.

According to reports she anchored off the Carrick rock when she lost control, but the anchor / line gave shortly after the crew were taken off, and the yacht was blown / thrown onto the Carrick, lost her keel, capsised and sank.

Sounds like the ILB got the crew off. I imagine they’ll be keen to get inside the boat, I believe they left without wallet, keys etc.

Awful shame, glad crew are all OK. Its so annoying when creel fishermen shoot their creels near harbour entrances, which appears to be the case here?
Bay Ny Carrickey is one of the main crab/lobster potting targets in the south of the island, especially around Carrick rock. Had the yacht come in closer to the Alfred pier they would probably have been ok and been able to pick up a mooring.

Having said which the number of pots around the south coast is getting bloody silly, and many of the ‘markers’ invisible.

There's 'near harbour entrances' and then there's 'in the main approach route'.

Bit harsh, perhaps. 30 knts on the beam in 2.5m seas in a 12m boat doesn't really constitute marginal conditions. Maybe Douglas would have been a better option but that's from a sofa with hindsight.
You must be joking.
Big tides as well so half the passage likely to be wind against tide. 10 hrs trip in snotty horrible wet cold conditions.
Agree about Douglas being a better option but not setting off at all would have been far better

Wont have been a fun trip Claymore, but with a decent crew I wouldnt hesitate to tackle those conditions in my old boat and indeed have raced in them. That said, why do so if you dont have to?
