Worldspace Satellite Radios

Just a quick note to ask if anyone has used these products on a yacht. How is the reception? I find it hard to belive that it can get that good a signal while underway. I also wondered how quickly it eats through batteries and what alternatives there are to power them?

Thanks

I only just got one (in Gib) so this isn´t going to help much. It is fussy about direction so I don´t think it would be much good underway. They claim to be developing a unidir antenna.

The med forcasts are from thre US and not as detailed as Navtex eg there is no Straigt of gib forcast. However they come every hour. It looks like it will go subscription at some point, don´t know how much.

It works fine at anchor if not rolly. BBC world news is worth having.

Hi

I am cruising around europe in my Moody 42 and recently bought a Hitachi Worldspace radio, also in GIB.

I find that I have no problem using it whilst sailing, even with a bit or rolling sea, so it gets my recommendation on this front at least.
However I do think that the choice of channels is a bit Agfrican oriented, there being only so much news from Soweto that you need to hear !

As for battery consumption I do not yet have any idea as I have yet to flatten a set, and run opf the mains when I have it available.

Hope this helps.

PS, the price of the sets seems to vary but in GIB I got the Hitachi for 130gbp.
