Woman and two dogs missing after boat crash off Suffolk/Essex coast

Fred Rift. Sea Harriers had fixed wings and the 'Through Deck Cruisers' were commonly referred to as Aircraft Carriers. :p PS I didn't say I drove as I wasn't the Commanding Officer, however as OOW whenever I was on watch I was responsible to the Commanding Officer for the safe operation of the Ship.

My mistake.
When I hear fixed wing I think of cats & traps - not STOVL :o

I will call up ship [Not RN, Peter, I just dip my flag for them] if I am concerned that we are going to pass fairly close [for instance when she is 4 miles astern on the same heading as me with a CPA of .06Nm. Mainly to see if they are aware of my existence and to get some idea of whether they are likely to pass to Stbd or Port. One often wonders who you are speaking to. I sometimes wonder if it is the Watch Officer or someone else on the bridge, maybe the cook delivering the tea. I always assume it is the Watch Officer as they generally tell me that they will take action to increase the CPA and do.

Somewhat curious as the MAIB list this as "Under investigation". If they have not reported how come a court is making charges?

MAIB reports are not for use in legal proceedings and are for changing any practices and procedures etc... The legal enquiry is independent, and as in this case was undertaken by the Maritime and Coastguard Agency, who obviously feel they have enough evidence to prosecute

All very sad. I cant imagine a dredger moves exceptionally quickly so report will make interesting reading but it takes two vessels to make a collision.
I nearly got run down by one near the Owers, I was well clear and getting clearer put boat on autopilot and went down to check chart when I heard a loud shout, sprinted upstairs and it was heading directly for me. When I looked back it looked as if it was dumping rather than dredging. Suspect it had reached its dumping ground and was circling round doing that.

I do worry that this is a case of get the OOW because the deceased was a local and popular because she looked after animals. As we have an advisarial court system I don't hold much hope the truth will be discussed.

Don't jump to conclusions until after the details become public (I have heard a little more on the grapevine than is generally known but as the matter is going before the courts I'm not putting it on a public forum)

A bit premature I think, not to say incorrect - she was a medical receptionist and ran a longstanding support group for cancer patients. The fact she also had two pet dogs would have little effect on a decision to prosecute anyone in these circumstances.

Just caught up on this over the weekend and send deepest condolences to Peter Ingram. It's a situation any of us could find ourselves in and has resulted in a lot of discussion here in the Saguday household. We await with interest the MAIB reports and the outcome of the court case.

I am not jumping to conclusions or being premature. I am simply expressing a concern about how the legal system works and what motivates the decision to prosecute.

Like I said, watch this space. The motivation to prosecute will become clear once the facts are more widely known
