I am contemplating rewiring my 1976 Berwick. While 'investigating' the existing wiring I was surprised to find that the negative wires went through the 3 Way Vetus isolating switch while the positive wires went directly from the batteries to the starter motor - is this correct?

Antrim,
On my Konsort, the main negative cable is connected to the engine body, while the positives from batteries one and two go through the Vetus type off/1/2/both isolator. My engine is a Bukh with a Paris-Rhone alternator, if that makes any difference.
