Winter in La Rochelle

calling Bambola

there can't be many places left in france where you'll be the only brit! I know poster hereabouts "bambola" either lives or has lived there for some time and being a circumnavigator he must be fairly picky, really. Beuutiful spot, of course.

I wintered up the Sevre-Niortaise, in Marans, during 2000/1.

Very pleasant friendly village, a small Brit population and 6 docs who mostly speak English.
I was prevailed on to join the local vets section of the Rugby club - Thursdays' training in the PMU, serious stuff.
The local municipal police cheif, Stefan, doubles up as harbourmaster and the monthly fee was £25 (in francs).

I doubt you'll find an established Brit population in les Minimes and the inner basins tend to be reserved for the brokers.

We spent last November and December there. Minimes is OK - you will find a berth and its quite cheap. Showers and toilets ok but you might have to walk a bit for them. Its a reasonable hike into town but its better to motor around to the old port where you can stay for free if you've paid in Minimes providing you stay on the boat overnight. This has the huge advantage of being right by the excellent restaurant action (there is s great oysters & wine bar at the top of the ramp which will do a dozen oysters with wine for €10).

There is some good day sailing - lunch in St Martin is a treat. Its worth going up the river to Rochefort as well.

Generally we saw a few other Brit boats and managed to chat to a few people. Enough English is spoken that Franglais gets you by. Best local pub action : go to the old town and visit L'Academie de la Biere. Very friendly English speaking landlord.
