I know the met office & beeb won't be saying much yet, but after a generally windy week-end, there should be a fair lull on Tuesday in Scotland.

Followed by a fair westerly howler on Wednesday, maybe into Thursday.

Time on Tuesday to go and check everything is tied down.....

Probably as bad as the last bad one.
I'm in the mid North Sea at present, and there is some nervousness about coming conditions already. Checking all round for any loose gear etc..rescheduling of supply boats to be finished out here by then.
The timing of course may slide a bit, but it looks fairly nasty, particularly on the west side of Scotland.

Aye. Planning the last sail of the year for Tuesday. Looks like the only day this week it won't be blowing old boots.

Take care out there and have a good Christmas!

Well this morning in Inverness it was blowing a knock you off your feet from the north I think and full of horizontal sleat!
So much for a mild Christmas!

Happy Christmas

Olewill wishes you all in Scotland (and UK) a very happy Christmas and I hope that the storms don't amount to as much as you fear as 2011 ends. Good luck for the New Year and safe boating. from olewill in the other Perth 17 to 32 for Xmas day)

Weather forcasting

Listening to the shipping forecast earlier this evening is the first time I've heard a Hurricane/ Gale Force warning for the UK.

Safe tidings for all mariners out there.

Snap; I can't see it being any worse than the last lot of windy pops a month ago though. The worst we saw on the gauge was 60kts.

It's looking more or less as nasty as the last one. +-70Kts peak out here , maybe 8m seas. Pretty similar on the exposed bits of the west coast. Wednesday evening / night out here but earlier on the west coast. It all tails off into Thursday -fortunately when I'm looking for a chopper:)

By Hogmanay, there's a new low developing west of Iceland, perhaps slower moving than the more southerly tracked lows, but reasonably deep. We may well see a steep gradient between that and the Azores high, if that nudges north a little. I reckon that Scotland could well be very windy again by 1 -2 January... There goes my New Year sailing ideas...:(

Hurricane 'Dagmar'!

Yes! Hurricane 'Dagmar' hit the west coast of Norway last night! 90mph winds recorded in our marina! and 123mph a little to the north of here! Trees down (one in my garden) shipping containers blown around, some structural damaged and its blowing again tonight! We suppose to have our annual Christmas regatta in the morning! Oh! my wife's uncle, on a north-sea supply ship reported 15 metre waves out there!!!!

I am going down in the morning to tie down my boat.
Was going to fit anchor fixing in the concrete either side and use a webbed ratchet strap, but have decided to bolt the anchor to the concrete (there is a hole in one of the flukes) and litterally anchor her down using the chain and windlass.
Probably wont stop other boats flying about the place.
Best luck to all boaters and off shore workers.

PS Think we should call this one "Fannybaws" since the last one was called "Bawbag".

The "official" met offshore forecast is talking 8m significant and 11m max sea height , with 70Kts likely out here. Not a lot of work will be going on tomorrow
Safe for a few days from later on Thursday... but maybe not down enough to go out under sail once I get home...

Just about flat calm over here in the middle of the north sea right now, spookily warm too. The storm shutters are on the wheel house so we're ready for the worst.

DFDS advising of 7 HR delay at present

You don't want to be out here anyway...;)

7 to 9m seas, 60-70Kts ,rain. All the tops of the waves smeared over into long lines of froth...
Flights cancelled due to lack of standby cover for any ditching..not that anybody wants to fly in this weather anyway ..

Just find some "Elephant beer" and relax. Hmm.. well maybe not...

The chief just asked me to go on deck to do some wiring and replace a pair of lightbulbs; I told him he's got 2 hopes of that happening before the weekend and one of them's called Bob. Even supposing I liked cold horizontal salt water power showers, I doubt I could do either job while lashed to the nearest handrail...;)
