How true that is. I'm a sailing addict, and reasonably competent, with (usually) a fair sense of what's going on all around out there.
SWMBO sits, uncomfortable and unable to learn anything predictable in the boat's movement or the reasons for the systems, or appreciation of our progress in the seascape.
I don't think you can learn that unconscious ease and familiarity with variably predictable movement. You either have it, and develop with it an enjoyable sense of co-ordination and readiness to deal with the tasks that arise, or you don't, and you just want to be left alone till it's time to go ashore.
It's sad, but there it is. I think any novice who actually wants to buy a boat and learn to sail it, is already a long way towards confidence and competence, just by having that attitude.
