Aerogen 4 capacitors

To brake ours, I just inserted a switch below deck to short the two wires coming down from the Aerogen.

Yes that is as per diag. which is why I more or less discounted it. as I said these devices are more normally associated with overload protection.
Unless OP gets back on the connection queries we shall never know.

Its a lowish value electrolytic capacitor. It will be polarised. Checking with an ohm meter across it should show it charging, increasing resistance reading, the reversing probes will show it discharging, very low resistance, then charging again in the opposite polarity.
