Wifi booster aerial

Hi, MailASail here (maker of Wifi Bat).

However, please remember this situation has come about because of changes *Apple* have made, so please direct your anger appropriately... The rest of us are doing our best to work around Apple, but remember our hands are somewhat tied...

this is quite amusing. apple have turned on kext signing to make the os more secure. it was widely telegraphed - the dev notes for 10.9 even told you this. as a manufacturer, you surely take notice of such stuff?

easy to blame apple, but by your own admission you make the kit, you provide the driver. quit carping and get it signed. simples :)

Those were my thoughts , im not a techno but if I manufactured and sold something - wifi BAT- that relies on other peoples products or services, Id want to keep upto date with any changes to ensure that existing customers stayed with us and also the product wasnt obsolete to new users.

http://www.crucialwifi.co.uk/[/url] as prices seem reasonable, items are genuine and service is good. I've bought several items there and only had one problem. I emailed for help late at night and found a reply the next morning. It didn't solve the problem but he responded to my next emails very quickly and suggested a fit which did work. No connection with the company and think it is a one man band type of operation. I intend to continue buying from him as service has been so good.

Thanks for the recommendation Mistroma. I bought a booster with onboard wifi router from Toni. As a complete computer numpty I did struggle with the setting up. I sent mail to Toni this morning, hoping for a response tomorrow and have had several e-mails from him today (Sunday) and am finally connected to Tarbert Harbour wifi.

I can get THA wifi with the laptop alone, but the signal is much stronger and page loading quicker. With the laptop I can see 2 wifi broadcasts. With the Alpha Tube U(G) and a marinised aerial (currently in the saloon) via the Alpha R36 wifi router I could see 10 earlier (down to 7 now for some reason). The marina here is a fair way out of town (a few hundred metres) and so I am sure this is going to be very useful.

Strongly recommend crucial wifi - great service and £109 for the whole kit, against my budget of £1k plus after last year's boat show!

No connection (pun not intended:)) with the company etc..

Paul

ps - since posting put the aerial/Tube U(G) under the sprayhood and can see 13 wifi signals - mostly password protected of course.

If you want to connect tablets and smartphones to the internet on your boat the simplest (and cheapest) solution is to use the Alfa R36 wireless router with a suitable booster antenna that plugs into the R36 USB port. I use the Alfa Tube N (future proof) but the Tube U/G is equally good (but won't pick up 'N' wifi).

The R36 is powered from 12V but does require a computer (laptop) with an ethernet connection for the initial set-up. Once the set-up is complete the ethernet can be removed and all devices (laptop, iPad, iphone, Android phone/tablet etc) can connect to the R36 using wifi, just like with your wireless router at home.

Note that the R36 requires different firmware for the Tube(N) vs Tube (U/G) if I remember correctly.

I have the R36 with Tube N and no complaints - just a bit of a fiddle initially to get all set up and working.

Correct.

As well as the Tube N (omnidirectional with 9dBi antenna) I also have an old ASWUS036H connected to a high gain directional panel antenna (18 dBi?) that I sometimes use with the R36 if the Tube N omni is not sensitive enough for a reliable connection. This means reloading the R36 firmware, but it only takes 3 or 4 minutes from the laptop, including the R36 reboot.

The firmware files are available on the Alfa site and can be stored on the laptop ready for upload to the R36 when required.
