Thanks Ed . Very useful summary . Our problem was not with the arial but with the free to use site that it allowed us to connect to . And yes our antivirus was just out of date
Hi, MailASail here (maker of Wifi Bat).
However, please remember this situation has come about because of changes *Apple* have made, so please direct your anger appropriately... The rest of us are doing our best to work around Apple, but remember our hands are somewhat tied...
this is quite amusing. apple have turned on kext signing to make the os more secure. it was widely telegraphed - the dev notes for 10.9 even told you this. as a manufacturer, you surely take notice of such stuff?
easy to blame apple, but by your own admission you make the kit, you provide the driver. quit carping and get it signed. simples![]()
Mistroma; Try [url said:http://www.crucialwifi.co.uk/[/url] as prices seem reasonable, items are genuine and service is good. I've bought several items there and only had one problem. I emailed for help late at night and found a reply the next morning. It didn't solve the problem but he responded to my next emails very quickly and suggested a fit which did work. No connection with the company and think it is a one man band type of operation. I intend to continue buying from him as service has been so good.
Crucial are the UK Alfa distributors, best way to avoid fakes. They also seem to have better drivers than the Alfa site, no idea how. Thanks for the recommendation [Crucial] Mistroma. ...
If you want to connect tablets and smartphones to the internet on your boat the simplest (and cheapest) solution is to use the Alfa R36 wireless router with a suitable booster antenna that plugs into the R36 USB port. I use the Alfa Tube N (future proof) but the Tube U/G is equally good (but won't pick up 'N' wifi).
The R36 is powered from 12V but does require a computer (laptop) with an ethernet connection for the initial set-up. Once the set-up is complete the ethernet can be removed and all devices (laptop, iPad, iphone, Android phone/tablet etc) can connect to the R36 using wifi, just like with your wireless router at home.
Note that the R36 requires different firmware for the Tube(N) vs Tube (U/G) if I remember correctly.
I use one of these with an ebay flat panel aerial with a USB output. works fine for me.

It's actually an R36 with the 11n firmware!
