They look like a hole for a grub screwHa, never noticed them before! I just had a look and from outside the holes are angled upwards, so am thinking some kind of weep hole?
I thought that until I took a close look. The upward angle would make it impossible to undo a grub screwThey look like a hole for a grub screw

Hey Vas, they are tiny and only on one side of the stanchion, plus their angle would be useless to hold anything. I'm pretty sure they are weep holes, if not, perhaps hiding a small grub screw as per Bouba's suggestion, but considering it's alloy, a grub screw would be s/s and therefore pointless securing aluminium due to corrosion.Mark,
stancions are alloy, right? like mine, could well be to fit attachments to hang hooks and stuff like that (I had a couple of these on my f/b stancions)

Vas, you may be looking at the wrong holes…on one of the handrails there are two holes that look like something was riveted on…but on the base there is also a holeI know, but that's how mine were... Maybe a PO fitted something and later changed his mind -hence the odd angle that probably suited him best to hand a drill there.
I'd accept the weep hole theory if these holes were in all stanchions... (or at least near railing joints) Difficult to see the point if they are randomly in a few stanchions though.
interesting! You could all be enjoying Weymouth right now !
Knowing England, they probably have a hose pipe ban as wellinteresting!
so we have summertime wash restrictions in SoF and drying restrictions up in the UK?
How come?
Surely it's not raining in the middle of the Summer is it?

we are discussing about different things and most likely crossed wires.Vas, you may be looking at the wrong holes…on one of the handrails there are two holes that look like something was riveted on…but on the base there is also a hole
Yes, I think the previous owner had rivited something on that stanchion, no idea what though.we are discussing about different things and most likely crossed wires.
I'm talking about the two holes in the more central to the pic stanchion and I think they are for attaching something.
Seems like you're talking about the single larger hole at the base. This is defo drain hole my alloy bases for my alloy stanchions also have that, only that it's facing outwards, Mark's is facing aft...

Seems like no one told anyone about the ban in our port, everyone is washing their boat! I'm being a good boy and washing our boat at anchor with water from the water makerso we have summertime wash restrictions in SoF and drying restrictions up in the UK?
I’m the same way.....everyone else has a shiny boat and car...we are the only ones obeying the ruleSeems like no one told anyone about the ban in our port, everyone is washing their boat! I'm being a good boy and washing our boat at anchor with water from the water maker![]()
It’s been the same in most of the ports I’ve visited in SoF this year. If you’re right in front of the capitainerie they sometimes make an effort, but elsewhere enforcement is almost non-existent and many people are ignoring the regulations and just carrying on as before. I have to say, they seem to be taking it more seriously in Italy.Seems like no one told anyone about the ban in our port, everyone is washing their boat!
