Put sewerage farms next door to rivers?, been out on the Ouse today, me mate has just bought a brand new Evinrude 90 for his Italian built sportsboat, so we went out to do the obligatory 1hr running in period (as laid out in the manual) at no more than a fast idle speed. Unfortunately we had a fuel shortage problem, resulting in engine failure... (fuel primer bulb supplied by Evinrude fitted wrong way round on fuel line) bulb switched, end of problem, carry on down river, the place we broke down,..was right next to a sewerage treatment plant.
But why are they placed near rivers, not the first one I have come across BTW,
Surely they cannot be good for the water environment, gawd knows the smell was horrific! if thats the stuff that is been mixed with our rivers, no wonder fish stocks and waterside wildlife is depleting....would you eat a trout taken from the Ouse???? Not me

I am afraid that the treatment of sewage has a resultant product of "pure water" and thus they need somewhere to discharge it to ( its no good putting it down the drain as it will get treated again ))) also the filter bed sand may have been carried to the plant by barge.

Quite what they do with the other by products, of Fertiliser, condoms and tomato pips (oh yes! I once purchased a considerable amount of Sewage farm "manure" and had a fine crop of tomatos growing through the newly turfed green development.)
