This forum has never been kind to peeps seeking sponsorship … usually because most are looking indirectly for someone to pay for a jolly…yet it seems Arny had got in under the radar and was enjoying both sponsorship and a healthy interest in his trip ….so I can`t understand why he shot himself in the foot….
I usually give a few bob to this sort of thing but after his misguided attack on HLB …I too have lost interest….
Arny first got up my nose, months ago, he asked all sorts of questions and local advice was given in great detail, from around the country. He then ranted that he did not need help. Just wondered how others would do it?? This sounded horribly sneeky and disrespectfull to all the folks trying to help.
Next he put a pole on, asking who carried a kedge anchor, again being very carefull not to ask whether he should carry one, all though it was very obvious he was again asking for advice but to proud to say so.
Anyone coming on here is welcome to advice, help, usefull comments. Call it what you will. None of them need treating like twats for there efforts.
Next Arny derides Nick the other guy going round the country in support of the RNLI. Saying he knew him, but he was doing no where near the same thing, because he had a much bigger boat. Neglecting to say that nick is a cripple on two crutches after a back opperation went wrong. But was going round the uk anyway whilst he could do and thought he'd collect for the RNLI on the way, which sounds a dam sight more honest.
For anyone to take on the chalenge of sailing round the UK, especially in a very small boat, deserves respect, at least from fellow boaters. To mannage to loose that respect from many forumites even before he set off, is a monumental achievement.
I don't think anyone has said anything really unpleasant about Arny.
Yes, there have been a few posts that question the purity of his motives. That's perfectly legitimate and perhaps Arny should respond. This expedition is (to my mind) clearly, and firstly, something Arny wants to do for himself. I'm sure he is also committed to raising money for the RNLI but it's going round Britain for Arny that is the primary motive.
Fine, I have no problem with that. I also have no problem with him seeking and obtaining sponsorship to cover some or all of the costs of the trip, whether that's from private individuals or commercial organisations. Arny's website states (if I interpret it correctly) that all money raised goes to the RNLI (not to cover expenses) unless sponsorship application is specifically agreed with the donor. That's as it should be.
Also, as fatipa has said, there is nothing particularly difficult or dangerous about what he's doing. Even in a small, outboard powered boat, coastal passages of ~100 miles or less in good weather (which Arny has gone to great lengths to state is a pre-requisite) are relatively straighforward. To my mind this is more a test of endurance, or perhaps resilience would be a better word. Even in good weather, a passage of four hours or more in a small boat is tiring and tedious and, if the conditions are anything short of perfect (and they mostly will be), there are likely to be times when it is also uncomfortable, perhaps very uncomfortable. Making such a passage once or twice is no big deal. Doing it twenty times or so will require determination and resilience. Of course the whole undertaking also calls for a lot of planning and I suspect that is one of Arny's strengths.
As hlb said, it's a shame (and something of an achievement) that Arny has alienated a number of forum members, including me. I'm still interested in what he's doing but I'm afraid I'm not willing to support him directly; I support the RNLI by other means anyway.

What the man in the Princess says /forums/images/graemlins/ooo.gif
What is also staggering is this guy is also a flying instructor.
I know many such people and there are only two kinds of flying instructor or pilot that ignore advice from others, either dead ones or unemployed ones!
This guys should know better (and would have been trained to know better) than anyone that you ignore advice (especially NOTAMS which is what he was getting here informally) at your peril. I would also question his 'crew resource management' skills (something that is a vital skill in aviation) perhaps that is why he is going solo.
I wish him good luck and an eventless journey mainly so that I hope he avoids having to call out the RNLI and cost them more than he will probably raise.
I have noticed on the many fora I have been a part of over the years that the common denominator is always a propensity to denigrate any positive or forthright views.
Disagreement is usually followed by a degeneration into aggressive behaviour by one or the other and this is inevitably followed by a chorus from 'onlookers' stoking the fires.
As regards Arny's comments I have never felt moved to take any major part and I wish him well.
I have little interest in probing his motives, hidden or otherwise, accepting that he is doing the trip for the reasons he states.
There are all sorts of people doing all sorts of things on the water, for instance http://www.hilarylister.com/ and good luck to them all as far as I am concerned.
We support certain charities (the RNLI being one) and not others, not contributing to an appeal by one of these does not worry me at all.
The usual Happy1 and GC1 esque types of posting, although not as bad, but done under the sanctity of fund raising for the RNLI. He has bailed from the forum now so a few people have come out of the wood work to pass comment including me.
Forums are funny places. It's quite easy to fall out with people if you have strong opinions, which I certainly have. In real life however we all generally just get on, which is nice.
Agreed, words on here can sometime seem brutal in black and white (when they aren't accompanied with the music) when they are nearly always not meant to be. I am considered almost reasonable in real life by my mates. The ones I still have that is /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
I find that an odd statement to make! when the forums have been quiet at least Haydn has attempted to inject a bit of humor, and encouraged others to post about anything which may be of interest or humerous. He also can and has received a bit of pi$$ taking without spitting his dummy out. There are posters on here who enjoy fights and spats as well as personal insults. I dont think either does the spirit of the forums any good at all. There is a wealth of experience on here, I simply would like to see less of the personal attacks, I really feel people would not be so eager to insult one and other in a face to face situation, please let us stop the bitching that has taken place recently.
Now understand confusious. Arniy has sneakily had all his posts removed from the thread. No wonder everyone is confused.
ouh I did none of this, just asked where are Arny's replies , they seem to have gone,
just trying to see on his website where he's got to, Deborah, very sorry hlb has posted at me)

I simply said, you have to go when the sun shines (weather right). In replly to Anne. So Arny called me a pillock for going in any weather. Where upon a few folk jumped on him to say, please read again, nothing of the sort was said.
Dam, I was going to rewrite the verse of Arn. The fastest mobo in the west, but some one beat me to it.
I might have missed a thing or two as I have been away for three weeks on a yacht delivery from Poole to Gibraltar. What I am confused about is the funding of Arny's round Great Britain venture for the RNLI?
Is Arny funding the whole trip out of his own pocket or is part or all of the costs of the petrol and marina fees coming out of the money raised? We are not talking small beer on this trip!
If Arny is funding all the costs then I will take my hat off to him? If he is using some of the money collected, that's another matter altogether?
Just for the record, I ride my own motorbike in full police livery and do volunteer work for the National Blood Transfusion Service. I am one of only 8 police-trained advanced motorcyclists in the UK doing this work. You will often see me south of London in the home counties and on the M25.
Every time I leave my home on an urgent shout, it will cost me about £28 per trip out of my own pocket. I get no sponsorship or money what so ever and consider this is how it should be done.
