Why are Oyster Yachts so expensive?

That's very interesting choice, is there any reason why you limited yourself to those two choices. Did you rule out other used boats, including BenJenBav,Dufour, Hanse, Moody, Nicholson, Swan, Amel, etc. Would be interested to know what made you discount the others as possible choices.
By the way if the only choice was between a new Jeaneau and a used Oyster I would go with the Oyster as I would not buy a used boat

We looked at every type of boat we could for a year. I refered to the Jeaneau as it was the boat mentioned in the original post.
 
I was going to say roughly the same as Jordan there, Nostromo. Your post did suggest it was down to the 2 choices.

But, I will say for Oysters... They are far better looking, and have more sense to them, than Dicky Matthews' newer Gunfleet brand. (Sorry Flaming, IIRC you rated them).

Not that I'll ever have the money for one, but if I was determined to buy British in this market, Rustler would come way ahead of Oyster. But I guess they're even more pricey, and less common. My dream pennies go Dutch/Scandinavian every time.

i think the Gunfleet is actually designed the be Stretched. he was only allowed under the Oyster sale to build to 39` so its now out to 42`& a larger one in build. My guess is that much of the deck moulding can be easily adapted.
She will look better externally when longer, the inside is quite nice with panoramic views of the outside surroundings & as you would expect well fitted out below

Was in reference to Nostradamus' post, where he said he had to choose between a new Jeaneau and a second hand Oyster. If these were the only two choices I would also go for the Oyster if they were the same price. This is all to do with my reluctance to buy any new boat than any problems with Jeaneau, which I think are good boats.
In the real world that would never be the choice, which is why my post queried the choice Nostradamus said he had. Hope this helps your understanding

Actually you can get a very nice new Rustler 44 and a Rustler 24 AS WELL for the price of an Oyster 46!

In the used marketplace the only way the prices even up are if you go for a 25 year old Oyster.

Wow looks like this has been a long and tiring thread and was surprised to see so many negative comments on the Oyster Brand, what is all that about? We should be proud of this UK brand and i still believe that they are one of the best builders of semi custom production boats. Pricy yes, out of my league yes, would i buy one if i had the money YES.

I too will shortly be in the market for another boat. My previous were Vivacity 24. Westerly Merlin and Beneteau 361. Then a forced break from sailing. Now ready to kick in again.
Yes, I like the look of the deck saloon design. And yes, I like the look of the Jeanneau 45DS and the mid 90's Oyster 45.
Newish Jeanneau and 15 year old Oyster are a similar price.
What d'ya reckon ?

Hard choice! Just be aware that a 15 year old Oyster is of the age where it will likely swallow serious amounts of refit money so you could easily spend 25-30% on top of purchase price to bring it up to the same level as a newer Jeanneau.

My first reaction was b..x. I really wanted to tear you off a strip!!

What is wrong with made in Britain?
If you & a few others supported the uk a bit we might have had a few more manufacturers making a few more boats here rather than France & Germany then you might have a bigger choice of quality yachts
plus a job so you could afford one

Absolute carp! Broke down over 30 times from new

My Morgan broke down once in 4 years & that was the Ford engine!!

Could you please help me with a problem on my 1981 Oyster water tanks? Some of the fibreglass has come off the baffles and I need to source a adhesive and filler. New fibreglass and Araldite cannot be used. Any ideas on this and a source for the 8 1/2 inch O Rings for the caps. As a newly initiated owner of my 1st boat any light and help on either of these would be gratefully appreciated.

I can't advise on the water tanks. Mine has stainless ones fitted (by first owner, I believe. How about using correct grade S.S.screws or bolts with brackets?

Try logging into the Oyster Owners group
my water tank inspection hatches have "O" rings & silicone & dont leak.
