Better learn to spell before you call anyone an idiot :(

Think on this It’s better to keep your mouth shut and be thought a fool than to open it and let everyone know you are

You have no idea what engineering/scientific qualifications i have. I could prove to you that the weight is spread between both davits when the dinghy is fully up and secured properly on Whittall/Simpson style Davits but i dont have the time or the inclination to educate you .

Finally and my mistake here Never argue with an idiot, they'll bring you down to their level and beat you with experience.

FINI

No intention of argueing. Spelling was never my strong point. Never found any money in it.

On important matters I always found it was a job for underlings to do and they could sort the spelling out. On a forum I feel it dont matter much and folk will get the gist.

By the way, my partner had 600 employees and her spelling is worse than mine.

No bother.

I am very interested how you move weight from one davit to the other, It has been discussed before.

Not so interested how a 4HP dinghy goes round Cape Horn. On it;s davits, capable of three or four times the amount.

Just explain how the load is moved from one davit to the other. I'm all ears. Bear in mind, neither Whittal or Simson could find a way round it.

I'm also interested how the weight of the outboard shifts to the middle when the dinghy gets to the davits. Even if the engine was bolted to a real I-Beam, it wouldn't suddenly and magically balance when it was pulled up to the davits.

I can understand the bad spelling, but i can't work out the weird physics.

I think Whittal and Simpson know more about davits and loadings than HF - as do all owners of davits!!! HF - You can keep arguing that black is white forever but you will still be wrong regardless of your qualifications!

Nope. We're all idiots, Whittal and Simpsons included.

HF can prove it.

I dont think HF can prove anything, he joined this thread as a newcomer and slightly abused afew of us in his posts and replies.

I can tell anyone Roger Whittall is no idiot, hes retired and sat on his Broom ocean 42 in scicily collecting a very nice pension every month from his hard work over the years supplying the marine Industry a product it badly needed.

He started making davits, tanks, cleats etc for Brian Peters in the early days of Fairline and continued untill he was priced out of the market, as per all good uk companies that make a product that lasts,by poorly made foreign junk that now litters most bathing platforms on our modern boats today. He has supplied just about every boat builder I can think of over the years, you can go anywhere in the world, go to a marina and see his product, right around the globe.

So what im saying is hes no fool at all, ive worked for him, socialised with him and been on holiday on his boat with him, so I know him well.

The info I have posted so HF is from Rogers mouth, he had full test facilities at his works to test for weight, bends pitcing etc.

Hf I wont copy and paste you PMs from last night, but as you said relating to what I asked for my davits, YES "you are atrue scottsman"

Firstly sorry to resurrect this thread

I have a pair of Whittall davits fitted, and just trying to suss them out, as have no instructions. The up and down bit is straightforward enough, and the inner extension arms in out function as well. Question........How do you move the pulleys along? seem well fastened in at the end of the outer arm............bolt and the two screws out? thought I would ask before I cock it up

Thanks HW

The pulleys dont move, the arms at the ends push out to steady the dinghy, the pulley is the lift point centre which should be adequate.

OK Thanks Volvopaul..............It looked like the pulleys were fixed, not sure I see the advantage of the arms extending?

Cheers

I think they extend out so that you can wind the dink up tight underneath the arms so that it doesn`t wave about when you are underway .

Thread revived again, sorry, can anyone shed some light on a pair of Whittall Davits SD5, be interested in the length of reach and SWL of each Davit. Thanks. Wonder if they would lift a 9ft GRP dingy with a Suziki 3.5 two stroke attached,, could stiffen them up if not quite suitable.

Thanks PCUK, I think the straight arms on the davits SD5 which aren't listed, preceded that list and are quite old, they were on eBay but now sold, they went for £68 pounds, bit of a gamble bidding for them, with out the SWL, I'll keep your chart though, thanks a lot,the company that took over, keep no record of Whittall Davits, so we're no help, that chart is worth keeping.

Hello all.

I have a set of Whittall Davits. The bit that unscrews on the underside to allow the extension arm to slide out has been snapped off by the previous owner or one before them. I don't seem able to locate anyone that does spare parts and understand that Whittall has gone out of business.

I have unscrewed the nylon bit as far as a dare, but it hits a lot of resistance before it would unwind completely and pop out (using some grips on it). Does anyone know if i can get a replacement or if this will turn all the way out for me to take somewhere to get one made up etc.

Pictuers attached.

Thanks in advance.

Ive just had one made in stainless , its not a metric thread , I think it was a UNF thread so you either need an engineer with an old threader or you need to find a bolt to adapt, my stainless guy has no more UNF bolts in stock .
It was a difficult manufacture as the size has to be exact as it acts as a brake.

Looking at your photo I would leave it in place and first lubricate it and ensure it is moving freely then just drill the end to fit an M3 or M4 3 inch bolt , you could then remove the bolt and fit a drilled cap / stainless tube before putting the bolt back but that would have no other purpose than cosmetic to hide the broken bit ( you cant file the broken bit level as you need the strength to hold the bolt) .

Spell check ignored as a mark of respect to Hyden :)
