White van man is alive and kicking in his new guise. A fisherman. All the skills are there. Speeding through marinas. Jumping queues. 4 lettered distain of marina lock staff and all others around him and saving the cost of fenders by using the boats around him to cushon the impact caused by his abismal seamanship.
You can all spot this not so rare species in any harbour or marina with his usual plumage of tatty pot markers and surounding pool of fish guts and diesel oil.

Forget Abu Binliner, take action now and rid this land of the real public enemy number 1. Ask your marina management why they put up with the blatent disregard of the rules they so eagerly enforce on the general public but turn a blind eye to where these animals are concerned. Ours even advised us not to accept a particular berth due to the disturbance from the local low life.

Just out of interest if there is a "fisherman" out there who has the intelegence to read this post and can string enough of the English language together to reply. Maybe you could explain the need for this attitude to all other berth holders and the public in general.

I am NOT a fisher-van-man.

But, could times be changing? A local to us marina has served notice on its entire ‘van’ fleet, so that next year they are all out.

Bliss…

Take one ignorant fisherman, add a white delivery van and a congested motorway and watch the chaos as he charges through the lines of normal motorists. If you don't have such a thing in Aus thank your lucky stars.

Careless fishmonger

Last Friday in the west Solent was observed fishing gear (orange floats) widely scattered in the fairway. Not near the shore out of the channel, but in areas north and south. In the dark or without very sharp lookout indeed they were ready to foul any boat.
There was a single fishing vessel number PE331 cruising slowly near, but I cannot say that the gear was hers. I telephoned the coastguard and reported what had been seen. Maybe wrong, but had the impression he was not going to take the matter further.

We've got plenty of them but not necessarily fisherpersons. They are usually telephone sanitisers trying to get home for their rostered afternoon off.

I've also noticed a marked increase in the number of small buoys that I've assumed to be lobster pot markers. These are hard enough to spot in daylight with good visibility but would be impossible in fog or at night.

Are there any regulations or good practice re fishing markers?

Re: Careless fishmonger

The only time I've heard of fishermen being pursuaded to act like normal people happened some time ago in the Medway. Glass floats were being used to mark the pots instead of the flags, causing several boats to have to call for assistance. This was usually rendered by the fishermen who then charged for the tow. After a while feelings started to run high so the local boat club went out on a Sunday morning armed with shot guns. They shot and sank every float they came accross. Flags appeared the next morning. Maybe its time for the word to spread!!
