Hi,

Most of the new boats I see today have the cabin floor made of light and dark wooden strips laid side by side. Do you know what types of wood are used?

Cheers,

Tim

We've just finished replacing the old plywood floor on our Moody with a new one of the type you describe and we used a teak and holly veneer which is bonded onto marine ply.

Plywood is almost always the base of a floor nowadays. Solid timber is still found in some older yachts, but not new ones (unless you're talking megabucks).

The plywood (and who knows what that is made of) can be faced with any veneer. The usual choice is decribed as "teak-n-holly" although whether it's that or something less expensive would need a timber scientist to determine.

I used KJ Howells on 01202 665724 - I dealt with a guy called Rob who was very helpful.

I originally spoke to him at the boat show about what we wanted then we faxed a cutting sheet and had some of the panels lipped in 5mm teak (no cut edges for us!).

We went for the thicker 1.4mm veneer but unfortunately had to go for 12mm sheet rather than the 20mm we wanted cos they couldn't get it so had to bond 9mm ply onto the back (but this has advantages). An 8x4 sheet is about £140 I think - our total for the sheet, the cutting and the lipping was £275 - not cheap but in my opinion they really did an excellent job. Even with the lipping all the holly lines line up and it looks very smart - far too good to let people walk on it!

Cheers

Re: When is a floor not a floor?

When it's on a boat!
Do you mean floors or soleboards?
The idea of a bit of plywood providing the link between your keelson and your frames seems a little suspect.
