I'm looking for recommendations for a decent watch. I've been wearing my Seiko diving watch for about 10 years but I've come to the conclusion that I could actually do with something more suited to yachting, especially something that can store a series of times to give an alarm to estimated waypoints (either count-down, or actual time). Not particularly worried about things needed for racing, or compass, altitude, depth (I hope not :eek:). Price to about £200 so no Rolex or Omega :D I know that I could probably get by with a £5.99 plastic from the local garage but I'd quite like not to feel embarrassed when wearing it to work or meeting clients (shame on me I know :o )

your GPS will have various time alarms available :confused:
 
I've had a Casio Pro-trek for 8 years - solar powered and it's only had 1 new strap in that time.
It has count down timer, 5 alarms + hourly chime, stop watch with split time, world time, barometer with trend graph, fluxgate compass & altimeter.

Excellent sailing watch with big digits.

If you need to look trendy and more up-market , I believe Suunto do something similar.

Always worth an ebay search

I was wondering about the Suunto Yachsman (I think that perhaps the Regatta is for racers).

What I want is something that if coming off watch at 02:00 I can set to wake me up (assuming a 4 hr watch period) at either 05:55 or +3:55 hrs for my next turn on duty. For waypoints I'd like to be able to set a series of alarms, one at each estimate of time for course correction.

Big, lit numerals that can be read at night or in bright sunlight.

Some do, some don't. I've just got used to using charts, even if only a back-up and to be honest I like test my navigation skills. There's something really satisfying about checking progress against the sailing plan and finding I'm within a small margin of error (that gets smaller the more experience I get). Also, GPS shows your position against ground; over longer distances and tides you have to plot both course through water and course over ground.

Casio Protrek seconded, though I'd possibly change the strap to a fabric one as the rubber/plastic one irritates my delicate skin (;), seriously)

And you can change the batteries yourself with care and courage.

Besides, not having a GPS is a bit like having a reefer jacket dipped in Stockholm tar instead of Mustos. Very independent, but a bit knobby.

Have you some endorsement thing going with Garmin or Lowrance etc that we don't know about? :D

you have similar equipment to most of us, the watch need only be a simple alarm type or even a battery alarm clock ( stowed under your pillow as not awake rest of crew ).
My Nigerian friend would like to help with the Corum transaction :cool:
