I am looking for something so we can be nosey and zoom in on the boats going through the Hurst Narrows.

No need to be able to see gas nebulae, but would like something of reasonable quality.

What models should we be considering, thanks.

It sounds like you want to think "bird watching" rather than "astronomical"
Beyond that I can't offer any suggestions, but will be interested in the replies.

Spotting scope...

Is what you are after. Astro scopes invert the image. Huge range out there from £100 to several thousand. Leica make superb scopes with fluorite glass that all but eliminates chromatic aberration. This is important in sea watching as CA can interfere with the image big time. I just happen to be selling a very good quality scope on eBay!

Link please?

Leica link

Didnt like to put a link here as it might look a bit 'pushy'. But as you asked the item number is 251067444758

If it does not sell I would be open to offers but it might be a bit dear for casual use.

Don't be tempted by a mega zoom eyepiece. 15x to 45 x or 20x to 60x are more than enough and you will usually find that you "see" more at less than full zoom especially as you will often have to contend with heat shimmer even on fairly cool days. A good second hand Kowa or Opticron will be far less than a Leica. Also Leica have closed their UK service dept so everything has to be sent back to Germany.
