Which splitter

The Digital Yacht one seems good quality, but i'd prefer to have separate antennas. You also have a backup VHF antenna then.

Much more range with a masthead aerial though. It is what Salty John recommends.

They all seem very expensive, but I gather the Vesper also boosts incoming signals from both sources, which can't be a bad thing?

Up to you of course, but i've found that an AIS antenna on the pushpit has more than enough range, never been too fussed about targets 50 miles away :)

Not used the latest Vesper splitters, but they usually make decent kit. A bit of a boost to incoming VHF would do no harm.

I'm just fitting a Vesper splitter. I have an antenna on the pushpit and that has worked well for AIS reception. But the AIS Class B transponder has quite a low output (2 watts?) and I'm convinced that we'll be picked up at longer range with transmissions from the masthead.

My Vesper SP160 seems to work very well with my masthead VHF radio antenna. Gives a normal receiving range up to 40 or 50 miles depending upon the target.

Fitted a Glomex last year. https://www.force4.co.uk/glomex-vhf-ais-am-fm-radio-splitter.html
It’s been fine. TBH not much difference from a push pit aerial. https://seamarknunn.com/acatalog/Sh...Stub-Antenna-HA156C-AIS-SM818_HA156C_AIS.html
They both show up any transmitting vessel in a range of 16 miles or more and I doubt I’ll need to see them any sooner than that.

But don't use the Glomex one with an AIS transponder.

Fair enough. We only receive AIS so it was never a consideration.
