I'm about to remove the fuel guage sender from my fuel tank in order to pump out any accumulated muck from the bottom of the tank

I've unscrewed the sender from the top of my tank several times; it didn't occur to me to use a sealant on refitting it, and it hasn't leaked.

However, on the fuel pipework (and the pipework to the remotely-mounted oil filter) I've used Heldite quite successfully.

If you are screwing into threads, PTFE tape will be OK. If it is a flange replace the gasket or O-Ring like for like with what came off. If an O-Ring remember to lubricate with vaseline or similar. If you want to back the gasket up with sealant then Hylomar Blue is what I would use. You can also use Hylomar Blue on threads if you wanted.

If you can't get a new gasket or seal use Blue Hylomar but make sure the surfaces to be sealed are degreased well... (granny suck eggs :) ) I've used it for donkeys years in all sorts of fuel scenarios and haven't had a let down yet. Its also extremely widely used in the automotive/engineering industries and most motor factors will stock it...

Ha ha... beat me to it 'cryan' :)

Subject: Hylomar: Mastic for Diesel Tank?

I have a requirement for a mastic to seal a steel flange onto the inside a plastic diesel fuel tank. The purpose is to prevent leaks, and to prevent the flange from falling into the tank when the outer flange is removed. Can you suggest a suitable product? If so, please advise UK stockists.

Thank you for your enquiry. Our Technical Department have recommended Hylosil Instant Gasket for this application, this product should be available for the following stockists in the UK;

Buck & Hickman
FPS
Unipart Automotive

The above companies have branches throughout the UK, if you require any further assistance please do not hesitate to ask.

Hylomar Ltd

Biodiesel & gaskets

Here's a case of what a high % biodiesel did to a boat's Buna N (nitrile) tank gaskets.

Guess what all my new (c2010) fuel tank inspection hatch gaskets (3) are made of? Cork/nitrile :p.

Looks like I'm going to have to lift the engine (the tank is in the keel) and replace the C/N with Cork/Viton as I plan to return to that part of the Caribbean.

It seems a bit of a minefield nowadays.

Edit: The cork/viton supplier I bookmarked is USA based - anybody know of a UK supplier?

Hylomar Blue worked for me sealing an alloy plate to a polyethylene diesel tank, but it will DEFINITELY NOT stick anything on permanently - it stays semi-soft.

If you are relying on an adhesive to stick to polyethylene, tell me when you've found it and the joint has lasted more than a week in the presence of diesel. I have spent three years fighting minor leaks around fittings on a polyethylene diesel tank and have just this year (so far and touching wood) won the battle. Mechanical fastenings, sealed onto cork/nitrile gaskets with Hylomar red (setting type) on the gasket/plastic joint and Hylomar blue (non-setting) in all pipe fitting threads.

I and my diesel engineer tried all sorts of high-tech adhesives/sealants to get a good seal to the plastic, and all failed until I got good mechanical compression on a 2mm cork/nitrile gasket layered with Hylomar.

This was on a nasty cheap French-made plastic tank in a modern Jeanneau, not a nice solid Tek-Tanks one.

For threads and bedding in small gaskets and o rings Loctite 577, with a wrap of PTFE on threads. Just refitted my entire fuel feed system last winter and nit a single drip from any of approx 30 screw up joints. It is semi hardening, so may not be so good for PE.
