Which Marina?

I have just purchased a Fairline Targa 40 from Peters in Chichester. We had our first trip out and it took an age to get out of the harbour and to get anywhere so my wife is not happy. With two young children, it seems you have to be too organised with tides etc.

We were at Port Solent with the previous boat 4 ft shorter but Premier want another £2000 per year. Please can someone suggest a good, safe, easy marina.

But Chichester Marina is fantastic, as long as you time your departure and arrival there is no problem and the run up the harbour is quite pleasant. We came back from Cowes tonight, from Prince Consort to the West Pole was 40 minutes that's not too bad is it?

You could try Haslar Marina in Gosport, 2 mins to the sea. Similar price to Chichister I think, not as pretty and can get wash from the ferries unless moored towards the back of the marina. There are also a couple of other marinas next to Haslar - Campers and a new one (Clarance Wharf I think)

Plenty of marinas in the Hamble and then Hythe, Ocean Village and Shamrock Quay further up Southampton Water. All are a similar or greater price than Port Solent (£400 - £600 per metre per year).

Better take a few weeks off work and check them all out!

You could try Northney, over Hayling Bridge and turn left - Quicker to get to than Chichester - no lock and I had 2 metres of water in the channel 1 hour after LW on Sunday afternoon..

Quiet place though - no bar but new showers and offices.. Worth a look and cheaper than the Hamble.

As a bertholder at Hythe, I thoroughly recommend it. OK, it too has a lock but there are only problems on Bank Holidays or on a Sunday evening at 5pm on low water springs (it takes longer for the lock to fill/empty), but we've never had to wait too long, and you learn how to "manage" it.

It's very pretty, right on Southampton Water, opposite where the big liners tie up, and totally sheltered. It has a good pub, small supermarket, great Italian restuarant, it's next to the New Forest, and the ferry from Hythe pier (10 mins walk) will take you to the centre of Southampton with the fantastic shops in West Quay (my wife loves it there!). With a Targa 40, you can be in Cowes in 15 minutes, Newtown Creek in 30, and Yarmouth/Lymington in 40 mins, and you are well placed to go further afield. The staff are great these days (see my post on Scuttlebutt about the 15 minute lift of a sinking 50 footer at 22.15 last week!), there's 24 hour security, new CCTV, and a great community.

I could go on (I think I have!!), but seriously after looking at every marina in the area, we would never go anywhere else. Price?, we paid £4970 for 11.4 metres this year.

Certainly worth a look - why don't you come on the boat for a weekend and see for yourself?

Cheer,

Mike N.

Lymington

Depends where you live for easy access from home. But subject to that, you cant beat Lymington imho. Easy access to sea down very short river, no locks, and beautiful town of Lymington right there. Apparently there's a waitlist for lymington yacht haven, but not Berthon if you do it right. Berthon is better anyway becos it's right by the town whereas there's a longer walk form LYH. Not especially cheap, rates on berthon.co.uk

True, tis a dump (you mean the Ship, right?). In recent years, has become a charlie chalk franchise. But no matter, it's much better to walk 100m along cobbles and go to King's Head. Much better beer, food, bar talk, and wimmin. With some exceptions - one of the local greebo women brings her pet mice to the bar and they sit there patiently while she drinks her pint

I cannot believe how much u guys are charged! You'd think that with so much business, and so many marinas offering so much competition - prices would be lower! Much lower! Ouch!

11 metres, inclusive of unmetered electricity - £2270 - just wrote the cheque a couple of weeks ago... Teddington harbour.

What and dice with that sill??! Surely Northney is a better bet if you're worried about access- 24/7 all states of the tide, or one of the Southampton marinas.
