I'm thinking of buying a 2nd hand windvane auxilary rudder type but don't think I can afford a hydrovane. Also as my boat is only 30 feet I think something slightly smaller might do. I remember seeing an alternative auxilary rudder type some time back in a marina which looked like it might do the job but unfortunately have no name for it. I like the idea of a back-up rudder for safety and also the absence of control lines in the cockpit another plus. The unit I saw was a simple tidy unit smaller than hydrovane, anyone have a guess as to possible make? Cheers Russ

Russ,

Possibly you were looking at the Flemming gear.

http://www.flemingselfsteer.com/auxiliary_rudder.htm

There was a very nice one on EBay a few weeks back.

Particularly nice bit of gear, (which I'm looking fwd to putting on the back of my boat this winter).

It is a bit of a hybrid insofar as it uses the 'standard' Flemming 501 mounted onto the auxiliary rudder...its ideal for a center cockpit boat as the self steer part doesnt have to be 'hooked' up onto the yachts own steering..

You set up your wheel or tiller wirh a bit of counter steer to balance any weather helm...lock it off and then the self steer working thro the aux rudder does all the steering from that point on.

I dont want to start a discussion re this ...but ..I suspect that its more powerful than the Hyravane.

Regards Nick

It might be a Navik, in France it is a frequent windvane model for boats up to about 9m, but also used in 6/7m boats

It is lighter than most other windvanes, but it cannot be used on larger size boats; I fear it has been discontinued by plastimo, but it is sometimes (ie more often than other windvanes) seen offered in used boat gear sites.
